Alcoholism among teenagers is one of the most serious problems of modern society. Teenage alcoholism is the product of immoderate and accelerating use of alcohol in adolescents and young adults. A great number of our teenagers are facing problems of enormous drinking.

One of the trademarks of today’s teenagers is their sense of adventurism which may backfire once it goes unchecked. Most teenagers are very interested in experimentations or merely trying something new. Out of curiosity they want to experience how it feels to be under the spell of alcohol. Drinking among teens sometimes is done for excitement or as a form of celebration. Excessive drinking may also be induced by peer pressure, rejection by family members, lack of parental guidance, or the parents’ drinking habit. Teens’ inability to manage mental and emotional state is also a driving force to engage in excessive drinking. Attractive media advertisements that depict a sense of “machismo” among alcohol drinkers also entice teens to engage in drinking.

According to researchers, teenagers who begin to drink alcohol before the age of 15 are four times more likely to develop alcoholism than those who drink after the age of 21. It has been estimated that about three million teenagers in the United States suffer from alcoholism. Elsewhere across the globe, teenage alcoholism is increasingly becoming a social dilemma.

There are a lot of dangers associated with teenage alcoholism, these include health problems, behavior disorders, legal implications and even death. Accidents such as car crashes, homicides, drowning, burns, and often inadvertent injuries due to violent behavior have been linked to intoxicated teens. Since the brain of a teenager is still under a developing process, excessive consumption of alcohol can affect not only its development but also mental faculties, memory, and rational thinking. A number of behavior disorders such as impulsiveness and violent behavior are generally seen in teenagers with heavy drinking problems. Since it is illegal to drink under the age of 21, teenagers found with increased alcohol content in the blood can be penalized or arrested.

Being an alcoholic is no fun and certainly nobody denies that addiction is a form of sickness in whatever form it takes. However, being closely associated with an alcoholic is also no bed of roses and entire families are affected by the social behaviour of someone in the grip of alcohol addiction.

For a long term partner, wife or husband, there is a certain obligation felt to help the addict and support them in seeking professional help. For young children and teenagers there are often deeper issues to address, some of which are not aired for months or years as the family struggles to help control the effects of addiction.

When an alcoholic is living within a large family structure, it is reasonable to assume they take up a great deal of attention that might usually be required to help younger members of the family through difficulties caused by adolescence; exams; teenage physical development. Teenagers already have a battle with hormones: add Grandpa’s elderly problems and Dad’s alcohol addiction to the mix and you have a recipe for explosive family confrontations on a daily basis.

Extreme addiction to alcohol produces some unpleasant problems, not the least of which is financial. Alcoholism is an expensive addiction and one that requires a constant cash injection to sustain an adequate supply of liquor. Cash spent on a bottle is no longer available for the things teenagers tend to think are essential to life, such as clothes, cell phones and money for entertainment. The lack of funds can make a youngster resent the cause of ‘not being able to do stuff’.

The younger members of the family, although sympathetic with elderly problems, tend to view addiction as an indulgence. Grandparents with elderly problems are usually very welcome to be absent minded or even slightly senile, but not to be addicted to drinking. Resentment causes teenagers to rebel and object and so the vicious circle goes on and on…

An even greater problem occurs when the addict is a mother. Mothers who have an alcohol addiction have multiple problems to overcome for a number of reasons. Women often provide the daily routine in the house, beginning with getting the children out of bed in the mornings to eat their breakfast and ending with putting them to bed at night after a nutritious supper and a warm bath. All of this breaks down when the lady of the house is sleeping off a bottle induced stupor somewhere by the end of the morning.

The result is that other members of the family, some of whom might be trying to cope with elderly problems, must take over the household responsibilities while Mom sobers up in the corner – or not, as the case may be. Many American homes are being run by elderly grandparents because parents are either absent or drunk. The social difficulties faced by these reluctant carers are immense and in some cases, insurmountable.

It has always fascinated me that people of good will, people of letters, qualified people who study and earnestly try to understand the nature of addiction, can so often completely disagree with each other. Is drug addiction caused by a human being’s response to pain? Is it genetic? Is it socio-economic? Is it caused by a lack of love?

Experimentation and curiosity are the factors that draw many people to try drugs. They want to feel that “high,” the sense of euphoria that comes with drug use. Some drugs (like heroin) are more likely to cause addiction than others, resulting in an addiction from simple experimentation alone.

Drug addiction is sometimes considered the plague of our time. With drugs being easily available to people it can be very easy to pick up a chemical or even mental addiction to a drug especially for young or desperate men and women who take up drugs to fill some void in their lives they may not even know existed.

Sometimes drug use can begin with peer pressure or alleviating emotional or physical pain. A person who abuses drugs compromises their health and wellbeing. They start to develop abrupt changes in their behaviour. This may involve lack of involvement in social activities, lack of productivity in school or work, and changes in overall attitude. There are usually fluctuations in a person’s body weight when they abuse drugs.

Prescription drugs can be dangerous to your health, and many are seriously addictive and can even kill you. But a recent Florida study of drug-related deaths in Florida reveals that far more people suddenly fall victim to lethal drug combinations called polydrug abus than to individual drugs, and it can happen to recreational users as well as those trapped by prescription drug addiction.

Teen drug addictions cause every parent to flinch, partly because we are often at a loss as to how to deal with them. Whereas it can often be simple to detect when a teenager has been drinking, drug abuse can be quite tricky to pick up on.

The most important thing parents can do is trying to communicate openly with teens and encourage them to talk about anything that they are experiencing. People who realize they get into this dangerous habit may be too embarrassed or afraid to tell. They might even be worried that they will land into trouble if they admit to have this problem.

Detoxification is obviously the first step in the recovery, which you can see in many drug rehab centers. Medicines are given to make it easy for the person to slowly excrete the toxic substances out of the system. In the next step, the person finally behaves like a normal person and makes genuine efforts to stay away from drugs.

Many untrue myths on the origins of drug addiction and alcoholism continue to circulate. Some attempt to pinpoint the social groups most affected. Others attempt to recognize drug addiction and alcoholism as an illness or a moral defect. These falsehoods perpetuate unnecessary confusion, fear, and shame. Drug addiction or alcoholism does not appear in any particular component of society.

One of the best things about trying to locate a program for addiction treatment in Texas is that there are several options here to choose from. There are the general options for addiction treatment in the state that are strictly adhering to the policies laid down by the state health website and the federal websites such as the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the National Institute of Drug Abuse and the National Clearinghouse, and there are also programs that can be termed as purely holistic that use alternative health therapies. However, it is important to know what choice you have got before you select the right kind of program.

Another significant aspect about finding an option for addiction treatment in Texas is that no matter where you are, you will always be able to find a program. There are several programs spread across the state, in regions such as Abilene, Amarillo, Arlington, Austin, Brownsville, Corpus Christi, Dallas, El Paso, Fort Worth, Grand Prairie, Houston, Irving, Laredo, Lubbock, McAllen, Mesquite, Plano Frisco, Richardson, Rio Grande Valley, San Antonio, Tyler, Victoria and Waco. It is easy to find specialized options for rehabilitation in Texas in these areas. Just conducting a simple search on the Internet or getting in touch with a counselor on substance abuse treatment in the state will enable you to find several programs fitting every category and niche of treatment.

Here we take a look at some of the specialized options on rehabilitation in Texas that can be found and how these are specially modified to meet the needs of the people they are servicing.

Teen Addiction Rehab in Texas

These rehab centers usually target people who are in their late teens, but some of them will also take in people who are in their early twenties. In some of these centers, there are patients who are as young as 10 to 12 years old. This only indicates how drastic the issue of substance abuse is becoming in the state.

The teen rehab centers of the state have programs that are well-designed to meet with the needs of these young patients. They have strong counseling approaches so that the young patients can be helped to come out of their emotional wrangles, which might be instrumental in keeping them hooked to the substance. Counseling deals with the effects of addiction on their lives and tells them how they can overcome their emotional issues.

Different kinds of medications need to be used when teenage rehab treatment is concerned. In most Texan centers, there is a conscious effort to design the treatment in a specialized manner so that it can be compatible with the age and physical constitution of the patient.

Senior Addiction Rehab in Texas

These centers usually enroll people who are above sixty years of age. They are provided a community like setting, which makes it easier for them to collectively try and come out of their addiction problems.

The issues that hound seniors with an addiction are different from those that hound the younger patients. Due to their advanced ages, there are possibilities that they might have been using the substance since several years, even decades. This will mean that they are completely hooked to the substance. There will also be difficulties in administering them common forms of treatment because of the health complications that they might have.

Religious Rehab Treatment

There are many centers in Texas that cater to specific religions or even ethnic groups. It is very easy to find Roman Catholic rehab centers, Hispanic rehab centers, etc. in the state. People with these religious and ethnic affiliations consider joining such methods of treatment.

These rehab centers are quite passionate about the religious or community belief they are serving. This should also be a qualification in the persons who are enrolling themselves for undergoing treatment with these centers. For example, if a person is with strong Christian beliefs, a Christian rehab center will be ideal for them because it will have the spiritual and religious approaches that can really hit home. You can find religion based or community based rehab treatment in Texas from the Internet.

LGBT Rehab Treatment

One more significant aspect of the rehab treatment in Texas is that which caters to the LGBT groups, especially the gay populations. These can be found quite abundantly within the state. For a person belonging to this community, it makes the greatest sense to join such a treatment center because of the targeted approach they use. These centers are also free from problems such as homophobia and internalized homophobia that can be present in a general treatment center.

As a parent you may surprised to see your teen being pulled for drinking. But that is not much to be surprised considering that a reputed teen treatment center at Oklahoma has pointed out that teenage drinking cases are on a definite rise. So how do you know if your teenage child is abusing alcohol?

Symptoms and signs of alcohol abuse:

Smell of alcohol on the body and breath: One of the evident signs is the smell of alcohol on the breath and body of your child. However, it goes without saying that teens today are more proficient in covering this up.
Bunking school: If your teen is bunking school and is not at home, you can be sure that he or she is up to something. One of them could be joining a group of friends and drinking at his or her place. It has been seen that boys tend to drink at nights or at a time between 3 pm and 6pm well before the parents could reach home from work.
Change in the behavior: Teenagers tends to behave in a brash manner, they tend to rebel and become verbally and physically abuse. Complaints of your son getting into fights with local kids and other boys from the school become frequent.
Lying: When the teen lies and makes excuses, there are apprehensions that some of them are related to alcohol abuse on the sly.
Alcohol paraphernalia: Presence of alcohol paraphernalia like bottle tops, bottles, bills from a beer or liquor shop etc can definitely rouse suspicions.
Stealing: This happens when the teenager is so addicted that he would do anything to get his finances in place to buy a bottle or two. He may even steal things from home or a friend’s place to get money.
Change in friends: The alcohol addict will move to another set of friends who entertain him and encourage his drinking habits.

The risk factors for a teenager to drink at such an early age are due to the following factors according to information given by various teenage rehab programs:

Low parental supervision: The parents are way too lenient and do not monitor or supervise on the kid’s activity, due to which he or she takes undue advantage.
Broken family: If the teenager comes from a broken family where people are always bickering and fighting or when there are physical and emotional tirades between his parents, the teenager may resort to drinking as an escape from the troubles at home.
Strict parental discipline: As much as leniency on the part of parent is to be faulted, so is the tendency of parents to be very strict with the children. If you are too strict, the teenager begins to feel subdued. When he gets his advantage, he exploits it to the maximum, drinks a lot and then finds ways and means to feed his interest.
Peer pressure: Teenagers succumb to peer pressure easily. Though this is a general statement and does not apply to all, there are quite a few who give into drinks, smoking drugs with little coaxing and egging.
Thrill seeking attitude: Teenagers take to drinking because they want to feel like adults as they have seen their fathers and other adults drinking and making merry.
Family history of alcohol abuse: If a teen comes from the family of alcohol abuse, it is possible that he or she may also drink easily as a way to ‘get back’ at the people who drank heavily.
Girls watch their mothers who drink and follow suit: Girls tend to be influenced by their mother’s attitude toward drinking. If they see their moms drinking, the teenage daughter also finds it ‘cool’ to drink and soon the addiction develops.

As parents, you have to closely supervise your teenage son and daughter’s behavior. If found drinking, instead of being very angry and livid, be cool and explain to them firmly but lovingly about how alcohol can harm their health and reputation. If things are out of control, it is better to take these children to adolescent treatment centers where due counseling and treatment can be given to make them sober and healthier soon.

When kids don’t listen to their parents, they often suffer from consequences that could have been avoided. They tend to make poor decisions when think they can get away with something and often possess a false sense of certainty that bad things won’t happen to them.

Warning signs and advice from their parents, who have learned from experience, are ignored. Kids don’t always realize that foresight to them is hindsight to people who’ve experienced the same things.

When it relates to the topic of teens and their willingness to experiment with drugs, parents would be well advised to follow the very advice they bestow on their own kids: learn from people who have been there.

In the past, the words “My kid would never do that” have historically been followed by “Where did I go wrong?” “How could I have missed it?” and “I had no idea” only AFTER police or school officials provide the proof … and consequences of teen substance abuse. It doesn’t have to be that way.

Christy Crandell, the author of Lost and Found: A Mother and Son Find Victory over Teen Drug Addiction, is a proponent of the new trend of home drug testing because talking to kids about drugs isn’t always enough. Parents can talk to their kids and tell them to “Just say no,” but kids still struggle with what to say next when the peer pressure gets even stronger. The words “No thanks, my parents test me” have become an increasingly popular and socially acceptable excuse that can stop pushy peers in their tracks.

Dr. Michael Reznicek, one of our nation’s leading authorities on the subject of home drug testing, urges the use of a parent child contract. He believes that parents must inspect what they expect, but only after clearly communicating and consistently following through on those expectations, which is where many parents fall short. As part of the contract, he urges the inclusion of rewards as well as consequences tied to the results of home drug tests.

Ever since kids started doing drugs, parents have been at the bottom of the list of people who knew about it. However, that may change quickly for parents who embrace the growing trend of home drug testing.

How to find out if the teen is using drugs?
last few month my 9th grader is extremely tired and angry in the morning, because his body aiches to get up. Today first time I've noticed a light redness in one eye.He has asthma, and we think he is educated well enough not to use the substances. Am I alarmed for no reasons?

Alcohol prohibition in the US lasted from 1919 to 1933. Prohibition continues for those under age 21. Prohibition was repealed because it was violated so often. Given how much people like to drink, prohibition as a public policy was not realistic. In this article I suggest that we are seeing similar violations of drinking laws by young people, and that it is time to modify the prohibition on their drinking. The actions I suggest are already in place in many families.

Drinking actually seems to be decreasing among young people (according to the Monitoring the Future surveys the federal government funds). However, despite the “zero tolerance” approach, some young people drink regularly or in large amounts. On occasion, some die from drinking. Many college students experience significant problems from drinking, more so than in previous generations (according to data collected by Henry Wechsler at Harvard’s School of Public Health). Although more young people may be avoiding drinking, the ones who do drink are having more problems with it.

I suggest that overall it would be better to teach most children and teens to drink, so that when they have easy access to it-as they do in the college years if not sooner-they will know how to handle it. How would one teach drinking? The following approach would not work for every family. Families with a history of addiction, for instance, might well choose another approach.

1) Most importantly, set a good example and moderate your own drinking. Your children will likely adopt drinking habits similar to your own. “Do as I say, not as I do” is not an effective stance! What is moderate drinking? There are several guidelines available, including one from the US government (two standard drinks per day for men, and one for women). A standard drink is the normal serving size: a 12 oz. beer, a 5 oz. glass of wine, or a shot of liquor. Additional information is available at moderation.org, the website of Moderation Management, a non-profit organization which teaches ideas and techniques to moderate or abstain.

2) When your children are young, start by introducing small sips of wine or beer during some meals. These sips should not be enough to get a “buzz.” They will introduce the taste of these beverages, and possibly some additional sensations. The sips may be weeks apart, or even less frequently (e.g., on some holidays).

3) As your children become teens, gradually move toward partial or full glasses. Make several points clear to them. For now drinking is an at-home activity to be engaged in with parents only. This drinking is to prepare them for the freedom they will have in the future. By knowing about and having experienced alcohol they will more easily be able to pass up temptation at teen parties. You hope that they will view getting drunk, or other drug use, as foolish rather than as interesting or sophisticated. In addition to these points, inquire about their experience of alcohol. They are now drinking enough to experience more than just the taste.

Is there scientific evidence to support this approach to preparing children and teens for their later opportunities to drink as much as they want? Unfortunately there appears to be no strong evidence on either side of this question. As parents, we need to decide on our own whether requiring abstinence until 21 (or beyond), or preparing our children as just described, is the sensible course of action. However, for millennia parents have been preparing their children for the dangers and opportunities of the world. We teach them, step by step, how to use knives, prepare foods like chicken or eggs, drive cars, swim, stay safe in potentially dangerous places, and so on. Drinking used to be on this list also. Isn’t it time it got back on?

When a family is dealing with drug addiction, everyone is affected. Having an addict in the family can put stress and strain on all relationships as well as the family dynamics. The addiction causes pain, frustration, and anger in all members involved. Because it does affect everyone, the need for family therapy is so important.

There are many emotions involved in a family when dealing with drug addiction. You may find yourself feeling angry toward the addict. This is normal. You wonder how this happened, why it happened, and what you could have done to stop it.

You may feel depressed and helpless, even responsible for your loved one’s addiction. This too is a normal reaction. Often when someone we love is in pain, such as the pain associated with drug addiction, we tend to look for excuses for their behavior. We take the pain on for them and don’t make them take responsibility for their actions.

To begin with, realize that this is a huge mistake. The person with the drug addiction was the one who brought it into your family in the first place, and he or she needs to take responsibility for that. It’s not easy and will be painful for all involved, but once the addict realizes that their actions have consequences, they can take charge of their recovery fully.

Family therapy is a great way to help with drug addiction. Family therapy consists of all members of the family getting together with the assistance of a trained professional and talking about the issues that all are having when it comes to the addict and the addiction itself. Family therapy can be intense but amazingly therapeutic as well. It’s the perfect time to air your feelings in a safe setting with the help of a moderator to keep things on track.

Family and friends can play critical roles in motivating loved ones with an addiction to enter and stay in treatment. Family therapy is important – especially with teen addicts. Having the involvement of family members in a person’s treatment program can strengthen and extend the benefits of the addict’s treatment program.

Drug addiction and family is a volatile situation, but one that can be faced and addressed with love, caring, and compassion. If your family is affected by drug addiction, be supportive and listen with an open heart. It will help you, those around you, and most important the family member with the addiction.

By the time the record was released, Tyler and Perry had exited drug rehabilitation. The difference: When patients are admitted to a drug rehabilitation facility they are secluded from all the surrounding triggers and hence can stay clean with no effort. Government sponsors the use of acupuncture in drug rehabilitation programs.

This was their biggest fallout and her husband found himself in a drug rehabilitation center a couple months after the birth of his second son. The list includes residential centers, outpatient treatment facilities and hospitals with inpatient programs for drug rehabilitation. Therefore, I went to a drug rehabilitation center.

Consulting a physician or healthcare professional with experience in drug rehabilitation is a necessary step. In today’s drug rehabilitation centers, the 12 steps are at the core of their treatment programs. Only then will he react positively to the drug rehabilitation or recovery programs.

The specialized doctors in drug rehabilitation sustain that, during these multiple episodes of treatments and in between, patients should be constantly supported and encouraged by close family members and friends, in order to avoid relapses and to assure the safe and healthy reintegration in the society. But that is not what made the club drug rehabilitation priceless. Substance abuse rehabilitation drug testing can be done in treatment centers and rehabilitation centers.

My first job as a counselor was at a drug rehabilitation center called One Day at a Time. It will aid in deciding on the appropriate drug rehabilitation program that you will benefit the most from. Drug rehabilitation can be an arduous process, and you or your loved one deserves the best possible help available to help you navigate this difficult time with success.

Christian drug rehabilitation proves to be highly effective because the alcoholic is able to feel a higher power and the whole community, helping him to overcome the destructive addiction. Keep in mind that drug rehabilitation treatment programs should include a continuing care program that supports and monitors recovery. He re-entered a veteran’s hospital drug rehabilitation program, started attending church, and surrendered his life to Jesus Christ.

In 2002 over a quarter million individuals entering a drug rehabilitation program reported marijuana as their primary drug of abuse. These can include anything from drug rehabilitation to nursing homes to prescriptions to ambulance service.

Government sponsors the use of acupuncture in drug rehabilitation programs. For those who wish to get help with their drug addiction, there is several drug rehabilitation and treatments centers scattered throughout the country. Abused children, minority education, battered women, drug rehabilitation, food banks, homeless or lost children, seeing-eye dogs, free clinics, organ donors, habitat, teen runaways – there are numerous tragedies to choose from.

Drug test kits put your mind at rest and allow you to either put the question of whether or not drug use is occurring in your house behind you or take the next step in getting your teen drug rehabilitation, prisons, funny farm or drug rehabilitation facilities. Because of that reason, the number of programs for drug rehabilitation keeps on rising year on year.

There are many reasons why a person would need to attend a drug rehabilitation program. Since there are several different types of drug rehabilitation programs available ranging from inpatient, outpatient, residential, short-term, and long-term, it helps to learn what s out there and how to choose one. So clearly, finding the right alcohol rehab program or drug rehabilitation center can make all the difference.

Teenage drug rehabs over the past few years have strongly hinted at the unrealistic expectations put forth by parents on their kids. Depression is definitely one of the biggest concerns of teens today and the days are gone, when we would associate the feelings of depression and stress with older people. Teens are now the most vulnerable segment when it comes to being prone to depression.

The modern-age jet age pushes the teen down with a lot of new sets of tensions and anxieties. Yes, he is not yet in a corporate environment fighting for his promotion but there are lots of other concerns that can trigger teen substance abuse. For instance, the teenager has to deal with academic problems adding to the fact that there are a lot of expectations put on him by parents to get good grades in this hugely contested atmosphere. Parents take huge study loans and have stars in their eyes about their son and daughter’s academic pursuits while the children may have different aspirations altogether.

There are relationship problems as well which can be quite upsetting to many teenagers when things do not go their way. There are different ways in which kids (and even adults) can converse with each other, telephone, , voice-chat, social networking sites. All of them serve as potential dating and flirting points of contacts. A teenager may become a victim of sexual abuse through any of these forms of media. There was a report a couple of years ago of a teen committing suicide because her ‘friend’ online was not reciprocating to her anymore; this considering the fact that she had never met her!

There are health concerns among teenagers; there are many girls who pop in prescription pills for something as normal as getting some pounds more or menstrual discomfort, without even consulting doctors. Girls are known to go on a binge eating spree, where they eat everything and then rush to the loo to vomit it out due to feelings of guilt. Anorexia is also a serious psychological problem among teens. This is a phase which is the foundation of health for an individual and teens with their myriad set of unhealthy perceptions ruin it. This is purely because today there is no guidance available to them and what is present is also in the form of media overkill.

Teen treatment centers are attending to the rising number of alcohol and drug addictions. There have been a high number of cases of rave parties getting busted by the cops that are not just participated but even organized by teens. Alcohol, heroin, cocaine and the party drug ‘ecstasy’ are known flow freely in these circuits. All of these cases shout loudly pointing at one fact: parents and guardians are losing control over their kids and are not able to guide them clearly. The fact that they are either indifferent or exercise too much pressure on them do not make things easy at all. At teen rehab centers, not only teens get fully treated off their addiction and problems but even parents are guided to be the part of a positive change.

Lately, several parents asked: “Where is my teen’s anger coming from?” Teenagers, like adults, experience stress every day. The stubborn and argumentative teen is fighting for independence and less control by his or her parents. An angry teen is battling with daily difficulties and is trying to make sense of emotional issues, such as:
• changes in their bodies
• trying to establish an identity
• dealing with friends
• positive and negative peer pressure
• school demands
• separation or divorce of parents
• being accused of something they did not do
• being treated unfairly
• not getting a chance to voice their opinion
• chronic illness or death of a loved one
• taking on too many activities
• parents’ high expectations
It’s no surprise that our teens might become overloaded with stress. Teenagers have poor coping skills, and getting angry is the only way they know how to avoid feeling sad, hurt, or afraid.

Teens also have unreasonable expectations, especially if they are used to getting what they want when they want it. If this does not happen, or they realize that things are not always within their control – they get angry.

Their anger can take many forms – some teens might repress their anger and withdraw, while others get defiant, destructive or turn to alcohol and drugs.

Various situations can bring out feelings of anger. Parents are often caught by surprise and react by either yelling or arguing back, or punishing their teen for showing their anger.

Instead, parents need to see this show of anger or rage as a signal that their teen is battling with or facing a situation they cannot handle on their own, or is overwhelmed by the demands of his or her daily live.

Fortunately parents have many options to help their teens through their frustration and cope with everyday pressure:
• Ask your teen what unresolved conflict he or she is facing
• Listen to your teen
• Focus on his or her feelings
• Understand the situation from your teen’s perspective
• Help your teen work towards a solution
• Show your teenager that you care
Unresolved issues can escalate to physical violence, addictions, and psychosomatic disorders. This can devastate your teens life by destroying relationships, clouding effective thinking, and ruining his or her future. Seek professional help for your teen, yourself, and or your family if necessary.

It’s a reality that many parents are faced with, but none look forward to: Realizing that a child needs help for substance abuse and addiction. If you are still unsure if your child is using alcohol or drugs to the extent that he/she needs a teen drug treatment program, the following guidelines may help. Signs of teen drug or alcohol use include:

Sudden, unfavorable changes in friends

Negative changes in schoolwork or truancy from school

Depression, withdrawal, or hostility; these may also be indicative of a mental health-related co-occuring disorder, which can also be addressed with the proper teen drug treatment program

Increasing secrecy about possessions and activities

Use of incense or other room deodorizers

Increased “coded” language with peers (beyond standard text message coding)

Excessively borrowing money or stealing

Drug paraphernalia (some teens may dismiss lighters or pipes as “keepsakes,” and nearly anything as a friends’ belonging)

Inhalant products, which includes many grooming and household chemical products

Eye drops, mouthwash, and other maskers

Of course, some adolescents may exhibit only a handful of these behaviors – but it’s important not to dismiss them if you strongly feel there is a problem. Also, bear in mind that any illicit drug use or teen alcohol use is unlawful, and your child should be reprimanded even if addiction is not yet an issue.

If you recognize any signs of substance abuse in your child, it’s best to find a reputable teen drug treatment program as soon as possible. Look for a rehabilitation facility that:

Incorporates traditional 12 step principles, as well as an experiential approach that addresses personal goals

Employs a faculty of licensed professionals specializing in substance abuse treatment, particularly teen drug treatment

Offers opportunities for family involvement, such as home communication and regular family workshops

Teen drug treatment is only successful when it leads to long-term sobriety; so, it also pays to inquire about the long-term success rate among program graduates of an adolescent drug rehab.

Teenage drug abuse: doing something about it.

Smoking weed, just like drinking alcohol is often done as part of a lifestyle thing. Friends get together to enjoy themselves and they share a common reality, part of which might be the use of alcohol or drugs. We can all get into habits or routines. And they can be hard to break, particularly when they are bound up with friendship and socialising. A habit developed at a younger age however, can be a hard habit to break.

Making the right choices about who they hang out with, is very important for the development of young people. For them to see who is going to have a negative influence on their life, young people need to have some sense of where they are going. Even the best of friends can turn out to be pretty unpredictable when under the influence of alcohol and drugs and the clearer a young person is on his direction, the less he can be led astray. Teen drug abuse can occur when the interest and guidance of parents go missing.

After one of my talks, I have had young guys wait for their year group to leave before approaching me for advice. One such student in South West London told me his story of how in year 7 and 8 he was really into his football, but then drifted into a different crowd who were smoking weed and so he eventually dropped the football. Here was someone who had recognised the knowledge in the talk as truth and wanted to change his ways. Here was a young guy who had made a decision. He agreed he wanted to get back into his football again and that this was the crowd he should hang out with. He also agreed that he needed to look after himself better, eat better, work out more. He also said that he still had the goal to make it as a professional footballer. I could see that this young guy had got some focus back in his life and that he really meant what he was saying. We parted company with me giving him the simple advice that if problems should come up, whether feelings of frustration or failure or whether antagonistic comments from his “old”mates, he should just choose a trusted person to share this with.

Parents can avoid teen drug abuse by being the stable datum in the confusion.
“The Drug Attraction” is an ebook on drug abuse prevention. Simple to understand, it doesn’t pretend to be academic but is designed to be useable. The more parents know about the subject of drugs and alcohol, the more they can be responsible for their kids and the more they can help them stay in control of their lives <!–EndFragment–>

Gary Byrne is a very experienced drug education lecturer who did some time as a rehab volunteer back in the early 90s, after getting his own personal reality on drugs. His first lecture was in North London in February of 1993 and he still lectures to 10,000 young people a year around his work in the wellness industry.

What’s the difference between an alcoholic and a heavy drinker? I have a friend who is an alcoholism counselor here in the good ole USA, who says that if you have to ask the question, you are probably in trouble. Is this a question that has been lurking at the back of your mind lately? If so, here are some facts that might interest you.

Most people don’t think about such things. In fact a stunning 48% of the adult American population drinks zero, zip, nada, or at most has a glass of champagne at a wedding or a spiked eggnog at the annual office Christmas party just to be polite. Of those who do drink, the majority drink moderately or occasionally. The dirty little secret of the American liquor industry is that 10% of the drinkers account for 70% of alcohol sales, and those are the folks who drink early and often and never in moderation.

Now, we Americans are a pretty puritanical lot, but the point is that most people do not abuse alcohol and therefore never give any thought to whether or not they are drinking too much. They simply know they are not. It’s just a small percentage that has anything to worry about and an even smaller percentage that ends up dead or in rehab.

The High School and College Crowd

The statistics are a bit different for the high school and college crowd. Young people between the ages of 16 and 24 drink more than anybody else and are big binge drinkers( a binge being defined as downing more than five drinks in one sitting) This is the time of life for beer bongs and Saturday night keggers, but most people calm down once they are out in the real workaday world and jobs, marriage and children tend to sober them up. Only a few keep on partying into their thirties and beyond– and at some point, these few start to worry that maybe their drinking is getting out of hand and maybe, just maybe, it is.

<embed class=”videoYouTubeBig” type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” src=”http://www.youtube.com/v/8jl-o89Z8j8″ scale=”exactFit” wmode=”transparent”></embed>

A Test for Alcoholism

So what is the difference between a heavy drinker and an alcoholic? The answer seems to lie in the dynamics of addiction. It’s a long way from getting soused every Saturday night to skid row, but it is a clear path and a downward spiral and as we all know, alcoholism is a progressive illness. Once you are addicted, there is no place to go but down. Addiction, both physical and psychological, is about loss of control. If, in your secret heart of hearts you have ever feared that your drinking might be getting ahead of you , here are a couple of things you might want to ask yourself.

Have you ever sworn you would not drink and then ended up with a drink in your hand?
Have you ever sat down to have just one beer and ended up drunk?
Has anyone–either at work or a family member, ever commented negatively on your drinking?
Do you assume that everybody drinks and that most people get drunk and that people who don’t are no fun to be around?
Do you ever try to hide how much you drink( as in do you ever take those trash cans full of empty’s to the dump rather than leave them for the regular collection or do you ever buy your booze at more than one liquor store so that the owners won’t think you drink too much?)
Do you drink: every day, alone, or in the morning?
Does the idea of having to live without alcohol seem scary?
Do you physically crave a drink at a certain time of day and get irritable if you can’t have one?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you could well be in trouble. Just for the record, moderate drinking is officially defined as: 2 drinks a night for a man, one for a woman and binge drinking is defined as more than five drinks at one sitting. If you spill more than that on Saturday night, or have a family member who does, have a look at the video above and the links at the bottom of this article for a quick overview of the basics on alcoholism.

Think you can quit anytime you want but just like to drink to unwind ? You can prove it to yourself and to the world by taking a little test. I urge you to try the following experiment if you are concerned about your drinking. It is a surefire way to separate the folks who just like to party, from those who are truly abusing alcohol and are on their way to serious abuse and physical addiction. If you have the guts to take on this experiment honestly and with an open mind, you might find out something very interesting about yourself. Wouldn’t it be nice to know one way or the other so you could stop worrying?

The Alcoholism Experiment

For the next week have no alcohol except for one five ounce glass of wine with dinner. If you don’t like wine with your dinner, you can have one 12 oz bottle of beer instead. If you prefer spirits to wine or beer, you can substitute a one and one half ounce shot of whiskey before dinner for the wine or beer but…. you can choose only one of these three options, and once you’ve chosen you must stick with your choice. You can’t change around and have beer one night, wine the next etc. Also, you cannot skip a night or have nothing one night and two beers the next etc. Just FYI a five oz. glass of wine, a 12 oz glass of beer and a 1 and 1/2 shot of whiskey all have the same amount of alcohol so whatever you choose, you will be getting the same amount of alcohol, it’s just a question of what appeals to you. Follow these directions exactly– only one drink of whatever you choose for one entire week.

And that folks, is the way you can tell a heavy drinker from an alcoholic. It’s a useful test that separates the sheep from the goats very handily. Those who are in even the early stages of addiction will not be able to pass the test. Those who really can take it or leave it will have no problem. What do you think. Want to give it a try, or does the very idea put a meat hook in your tum tum?

Cheers and here’s mud in your eye.:-)

Question by crushabitrollituptakeahit: Teenage Alcoholism? Is it possible?
Hi im 15 and i find i drink more than i should maybe. i at least have 1 – 1/2 cups of strong alcohol (37-40%) a day. I don’t drink cause i technically need it. i drink to feel more comfortable. i don’t know if this is a problem or not. i think i could stop but its more convenient to continue in my opinion. (btw, i get the alcohol from my parents liquor cabnit). Thanks!
1. yes i have had blackouts
2. no not really. but when its available yes
3. idk

Best answer:

Answer by Betty
Possible? Yes it is. Being an “alcoholic” does not mean you need it. It simply means you are addicted to it. And yes, alcoholics will say the same thing you just said: they drink to feel more comfortable. Are you addicted? Only you can answer that question.

1) Have you ever had a blackout?
2) Do you ever think about or talk about drinking when you are sober?
3) Could you stop drinking, right now, for the rest of your life and be 100% OK with that?

If you answered yes to the first two questions and no to the last question, there is a good probability that you are addicted.

What do you think? Answer below!

Substance abuse refers to the overindulgence in drugs and dependence of other chemicals leading to effects that are detrimental to the individual’s physical and mental health, or the welfare of others.

The disorder is characterized by a pattern of continued pathological use of a medication that results in repeated adverse social consequences related to drug use, such as failure to meet work, family, or school obligations, interpersonal conflicts, or legal problems. There are on-going debates as to the exact distinctions between substance abuse and dependence, but current practice standard distinguishes between the two by defining substance dependence in terms of physiological and behavioral symptoms of substance use, and substance abuse in terms of the social consequences of substance use.

Substance abuse may lead to substance dependence. Both abuse and dependence are distinct from addictive behavior which involves a craving to continue using the substance despite the negative consequences. Dependence almost always implies abuse, but abuse frequently occurs without dependence, particularly when an individual first begins to abuse a substance. Dependence involves a biological response while substance abuse reflects a complex interaction between the individual, the abused substance and society.

Substance abuse is sometimes used as a synonym, but actually refers to the use of substances in a manner outside socio-cultural conventions. All use of illegal substances and all use of licit drugs in a manner not dictated by convention (e.g. according to physician’s orders or societal norms) is abuse according to this definition, however there is no universally accepted definition of substance abuse.

Recurrent substance use resulting in a failure to fulfill obligations at work, school, or home (e.g., repeated absences or poor work performance related to substance use; substance-related absences, suspensions or expulsions from school)

Recurrent substance use in situations in which it is physically hazardous (e.g., driving an automobile or operating a machine when impaired by substance use)

Recurrent substance-related legal problems (e.g., arrests for substance-related disorderly conduct

Continued substance use despite having persistent or recurrent social or interpersonal problems caused or exacerbated by the effects of the substance (e.g., arguments with friends about consequences of intoxication, physical fights)

Addiction was a term used to describe a devotion, attachment, dedication, inclination, etc. Nowadays, however, the term addiction is used to describe a recurring intense need by an individual to engage in some specific activity, despite harmful consequences to the individual’s health, mental state or social life. These compulsions can be gambling, eating disorders like overeating, and internet addiction.

Drug and Alcohol addiction are amongst the most serious and destructive diseases known to man. They are so severe and devastating that more people are killed as a result of them than all other chronic illnesses combined

If you can, you want to try and catch an addiction early ” because it gets progressively worse the longer you leave it until it even becomes life-threatening.

Three of the most obvious warning signs of alcoholism or drug addiction are experiencing withdrawals when you stop drinking or taking drugs which can show up in anxiety and getting the shakes, developing an increased tolerance so you need to use or drink more to get the same effects, and trying unsuccessfully on numerous occasions to cut down or quit

So ideally you want to get help as soon as these symptoms start manifesting. Problem is, alcoholics and drug addicts tend to live in denial and are therefore resistant to want to receive help until things are often really bad.

Acknowledging your addiction, whatever it is, is the first step in successful recovery. You use that as the foundation on which you build your recovery because then you are ready to receive help.

Performing an intervention is one of the most effective ways for helping someone you love break through their denial and ensuring they get proper help ” so thats the route to follow if its not you but someone you care about struggling with addiction.

The two biggest weapons you have in your arsenal to combat an addiction are knowledge ” and then putting that knowledge into practice. Do that ” and any addiction can successfully be overcome.

The causes of drug addiction are something that everyone should know about. Even if you have never used drugs, you should know in case someone you love is in trouble. Your child may need to you to know this too, when he is young and needs to be educated. From teen drug addiction to life threatening severe cases in adults, the causes of drug addiction are indications that your condition needs attention. In fact, once you learn the causes of drug addiction, drug and alcohol addiction recovery can begin.

How Does It Happen?

If you are someone looking in from how drug addiction happens, do not be too harsh to judge. All it takes is one experiment, one time of wanting just see what the big deal is to make a serious problem start. The high that people get from drugs is something that draws them back for maybe just one more time. Soon it becomes something that they can no longer shake. The experiment is now out of their hands.

The causes of drug addiction are not the things that we can control, like that experiment. Although it may seem harmless, within just a few times of trying it out, it can become lethally addictive. That is where the problem truly lies. Once the experiment has gotten to this level, it is out of the person’s control.

What you will learn about alcohol and drug detox is that it is not about the person’s will to stop doing what they are doing. It is more so about the actual problem that lies within the brain during an addiction. What you will learn through your drug and alcohol addiction recovery is that the brain needs to be retrained from the addiction. The brain will demand the drugs. That is because the brain is now much different, transformed even. It is different in both its functions as well as its structure.

Every time you reach that high from a drug, you are in fact changing your brain’s chemistry. This is what causes drug addiction and this is what makes it inevitable that those that continue to use drugs will in fact become addicted to it. Drug abuse is not something anyone sets out to do, but once that one experiment leads to a few more; it is a sure path to becoming addicted.

With this being the cause of drug addiction, the brain’s ability to function is severely limited. Every time things can be worsened. You should consider drug addiction a disease of the brain in which over time it becomes more and more damaged by the toxins. Eventually, if the user does not seek drug and alcohol addiction recovery, he or she will experience a range of health problems including the slow destruction of the brain.

The good news is that with a successful drug and alcohol addiction treatment program, the user can put a stop to this destruction.

Depression – this term is no longer a novel one. Everyone is aware of the term because almost each one of us goes through the depression symptoms at some point in our lives. Though the disease is extremely common still it should not be taken as normal. Because depression, at the end of the day, is a disease and any disease is not normal. So in order to free people from the grip of this very powerful disease, scientists have invented a certain category of drugs called the anti depressants. These anti depressants are prescribed drugs that are used for the purpose of curing depression. Everything related to the usage of the drug is decided by the doctor and then he prescribes it to the respective patient.

These precautions are necessary to be taken in case of the anti depressants because these drugs have side effects and sometimes very dangerous repercussions on the consumer if consumed without medical confirmation. Even the pharmacies are not allowed to sell these depression drugs without a proper medical prescription. Nowadays however, a practice called “drug abuse” is rapidly gaining speed especially amongst the teenagers. Drug abuse is a very self suggestive term which means a particular drug is not taken the way it should have been ideally taken. In the face of drug abuse a considerable number of people are harmed and many even lose their lives.

Drug abuse of anti depressants like Xanax slowly but steadily develops into an addiction and addiction of any kind is dangerous to health. Thus when the consumption of drugs like Xanax becomes a need in the negative sense for a particular person it means that he or she takes the drug regularly and regular use of these drugs is not advisable.

Here, a matter to note is that why do people fall for these kinds of dangerous drug abuses. What do they gain from them? The answer is that these anti depressants have certain elements that induce sleep into the consumer. That is, these drugs have effects of tranquilizers. Hence people especially the teenagers take these drugs in order to have the feeling of trance, peace, and tranquility. But they forget that these feelings of elation are just temporary and in the long run, all these drugs can cause harm, harm, and more harm.

The anti depressants like Xanax are invented for the purpose of curing depression. They are meant to serve a certain purpose but when people buy xanax or take it in an undisciplined way these drugs bring in more damage than good. The worst part is that in the greed for money even the pharmacies sell these prescribed drugs without actual prescriptions making it easy for the teenagers to get hold of them. In fact today anyone can easily buy xanax online from xanax online stores. As a result there is a rapid rise in juvenile delinquency because the teens after their drug induced mood are hardly aware of what they are doing. These drug abuses are also giving impetus to the rise of sexually transmitted diseases.

Drug abuse is a practice that is very hard to keep a check on. Firstly because no matter how much awareness is spread, teens are still falling in its grip especially in the western countries. And secondly, in spite of all the laws and all the rules and regulations the pharmacies and sometimes even the doctors are involved in the illegal sale of these anti depressants. Hence it will take a lot of time and effort to completely clean the society of vices like drug abuse.

Genetic and Environmental Factors

According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), a person’s risk of developing alcoholism is 60% determined by his or her genetics and 40% caused by his or her environment. Assuming that these statistics are accurate, what can be done to reduce the chances of becoming addicted to alcohol?

Genetic Causes of Alcoholism

Regarding the genetic determinants of alcoholism, those who say, “nothing can be done” are not totally correct. True, a person cannot change his genetics. Knowing, however, that there is a history of alcoholism in a person’s family, for example, can help a person “prevent” this potential problem from ever starting if he practices total abstinence. This kind of preventative thinking is an example of a “proactive” approach to problem solving.

More Proactive Problem Solving

The following illustration, however, is an even more extreme example of “proactive” problem solving that can affect the genetic basis of alcoholism. Maria, a young lady who drinks very infrequently, starts to date a young man named Kirk. As their relationship develops, Maria starts to notice that Kirk gets drunk on a regular basis. In fact, Kirk gets intoxicated at least two or three nights every week. What is especially problematic about Kirk’s drinking is that he gets angry and combative when he drinks excessively. On numerous occasions, Maria has tried to encourage Kirk to seek professional help, but each time she starts to discuss his drinking, Kirk gets extremely defensive, starts yelling at her, and then goes to a bar to drink with his buddies. After a year of riding an emotional roller coaster, experiencing numerous hurtful arguments, and going through many difficult alcohol-related situations, Maria finally decides to break up with Kirk. What were the major factors for the breakup? Maria wants to have children and can’t see having them with a violent and angry man who is so dependent on drinking alcohol. Moreover, Maria figured that since Kirk is exhibiting such irresponsible behavior in a dating relationship, he could possibly get even worse if they were to get married.

In this illustration, by breaking up with Kirk, Maria has stopped a negative cycle from going any further. Stated differently, by deciding to end her relationship with Kirk, Maria “prevented” the genetics part of the equation from ever becoming an issue.

Concerning Alcoholism, Age Matters

Another important alcohol-related statistic articulated by the NIAAA is that the earlier a person starts drinking alcohol, the more likely she will continue to drink her entire life. This being the case, it therefore makes sense to look for ways that will significantly reduce alcohol abuse by teens, preteens, and by young adults.

An Environmental Framework

Employing an “environmental” approach (as opposed to a genetics-based methodology), higher education seems to be a logical starting point for ways to reduce alcohol problems manifested by our youth. Indeed, since many teenagers go to college and because teen alcohol abuse IS a serious health risk, it is relevant to ask what college administrators can do to significantly reduce student alcohol abuse, especially when teenagers are some of the main “offenders.” It is suggested that the following reactive and proactive measures help address this issue.

Reactive and Proactive Measures to Help Reduce Student Alcohol Abuse

· Establish immediate consequences for excessive drinking.

· Discipline repeat alcohol abuse offenders.

· Monitor the drinking activities in the sororities and fraternities.

· Notify parents about their children’s drinking activities.

· Talk to the owners of local drinking establishments so that minors and/or intoxicated students are not served alcohol.

· Eliminate mixed messages about alcohol (for instance, removing alcohol advertisements from stadiums and from sports brochures).

· Inform and educate students about the long-term negative consequences of alcohol abuse.

· Increase the number of alcohol-free social and recreational activities that are attractive to students.

Generalizing the Results

With additional effort and some more thought, it seems reasonable to think that alcoholism experts and college administrators will be able to generate even more ways to effectively reduce alcohol abuse at institutions of higher education. Once this is accomplished, moreover, perhaps their findings can be adapted so that they will “work” in other institutions such as junior and senior high schools, boy scouts, girl scouts, churches, camps, and so on.

Conclusion

If a person’s risk of developing alcoholism is 60% determined by his or her genetics and 40% caused by his or her environment, it is asserted that the problem of alcohol addiction can be addressed from both genetic and environmental frameworks. Indeed, by using a “proactive” problem solving approach, the genetics part of the problem frequently can be eliminated. Furthermore, by focusing on various situational and behavioral factors, the environmental dynamics that help establish and reinforce alcohol abuse and alcoholism can be significantly reduced.

Today it is not very uncommon to see children as young as ten years old abusing alcohol in states such as Idaho. Drinking seems to be a new trend among young boys as well as girls. They consume alcohol without being aware of the consequences on their health or mind. After all, alcohol abuse is a state of mind. The alcohol consumption has a direct impact on the mind, with the way you think and perceive things. This malfunctioning of the brain would lead to poor performance in studies, reacting violently to situations and becoming aggressive and even poor health.

The mind of the teenager works very differently from the mind of an elder. Hence the alcohol addiction treatments too will be different. This is probably one of the most important things to keep in mind when you are looking for the treatment for your teenage children. You should select the centre that specialises in the addiction treatment for teens. Let us look at some of the problems associated with teenage alcohol abuse in Idaho.

Denial of the Addiction

Denial is one of the biggest problems seen with alcohol abuse in Idaho among the youngsters. Teenagers refuse to accept that they are addicted to alcohol for the most basic reason that is the fear from parents. More than two third of teenagers who are addicted, do not drink it for the taste. They either drink it because it helps them forget their problems or merely for the kick they get in doing something which is meant for elders and forbidden to them and some even resort to it under peer pressure.

The reasons they take to alcohol are very much the same all over the state with teens. They either consume it because of the fear of an unsteady home environment, the fights they witness between parents or pressure by their parents to do well in their academic pursuits. Sometimes they also resort to alcohol unknowingly, because a friend asks him to or senior forces him to. They are indeed very ignorant about the effect it takes on their health. It then becomes very difficult to get them out of this habit.

The treatment centres in Idaho have intervention programs which help the teenager out of denial mode and to accept the treatment. This intervention program forms a group of people close who are close to the patient and guides them to work closely with patient to come in terms with his addiction. This intervention program suggests some techniques which can help the patient agree to the treatment.

Harm for a Lifetime

Alcohol abuse in teenager is a grave danger because it is easy to form a habit in the teenager than in an adult. The body of a teenager is developing and at this stage if it is introduced to alcohol, the body gets adopted to this intake. After which it becomes very difficult to make the body free from alcohol and the addiction can stay for life. Thus for teenagers, the alcohol abuse must be treated as soon as it is discovered.

Risk of Secondary Addictions

This is another problem seen with teenage alcohol abuse in Idaho. As easy it is for the teenage to get addicted to alcohol, it is equally easy for them to get over their craving if he wants to. This is for the simple reason that the teenager does not drink it for the taste but for the momentary blankness which helps him forget his problems. Thus, it could also be very easy for the patient to get addicted to another substance of addiction again for the mere feeling of euphoria.

This is where the teenager can be hit with another problem, which is getting addicted to the methamphetamine drug. Methamphetamine is one of the largest problems seen in the young population in the United States. This is so because the methamphetamine drug is easily available to the young population of the state. These drugs are mostly made locally or sourced from outside the state and are available at mostly all youth joints like discos, pubs, etc. They are indeed very harmful as they directly affect the nervous system. The state government is taking lot of efforts in spreading the harmful effects of methamphetamine drug addiction in schools. The schools have appointed special counselors who help students with their addictions.

It is seen that a minor case of alcohol abuse in Idaho often converts into a full-blown addiction among teenagers if it is not nipped in the bud. And hence, they should be treated as soon as the addiction is discovered.

Teens believe itâ??s cool to use marijuana because they hear songs about it and see it on Television and in movies. Some adolescence may sense they need marijuana and other drugs to help them run away from problems at home, at school, or with friends.

No matter how many shirts and caps you see printed with the marijuana leaf, or how many groups sing about it, remember this: teens wonâ??t have to make use of marijuana just because they believe everybody else is doing it. Most adolescents do not use marijuana!

Marijuana is a green, brown, or gray mixture of dried, shredded leaves, stems, seeds, and flowers of the hemp plant. You may hear marijuana called by lane names such as pan, herb, wild plant, prairie, boom, chronic etc. There are more than 200 terminology terms for marijuana. Sinsemilla (sin-seh-me-yah; itâ??s a Spanish word), hashish (â??hashâ? for short), and hash oil are stronger forms of marijuana.

Teens smoke marijuana

Opposing to fashionable belief, most teenagers do not use marijuana. Among undergraduate surveyed in a yearly national survey, only about one in six 10th graders report they are recent marijuana users

Young people use marijuana

There are various reasons why some kids and young adolescence start smoking marijuana. Many immature teens smoke marijuana because they see their brothers, sisters, friends, or even older family members using it. Some use marijuana because of gaze pressure.

Regular marijuana users repeatedly develop breathing problems, such as chronic coughing and puffed. Marijuana contains the same cancer causing chemicals as tobacco. The amount of tar inhaled by marijuana smokers and the intensity of carbon monoxide absorbed by those who smoke marijuana are three to five times greater than among tobacco smokers

All forms of marijuana used by teens are mind-altering. In other words, they alter how the brain works. Teens take core vigorous chemical in marijuana. THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol), they also have more than 400 other chemicals. Marijuanaâ??s effects on the user depend on its strength or effectiveness, which is related to the amount of THC it contains (5). The THC content of marijuana has been rising since the 1970s.

The way marijuana used

Marijuana is habitually smoked as in a pipe or a bong by teens. Recently, it has appeared in cigar wrappers called blunts, when it is frequently combined with another drug, such as crack cocaine.

Marijuana stays in the userâ??s (teens) body as

THC in marijuana is quickly absorbed by greasy tissues in various organs. Generally, traces of THC can be detected by typical urine testing methods several days after a smoking session. However, in chronic heavy users, traces can occasionally be detected for weeks after they have stopped using marijuana.

The teenage years can be a time of great emotional stress as it marks the transition from childhood to adulthood. It is at this particular time when teenagers have to grapple with a number of issues like search for identity, peer pressure, amorous and family relationships, as well as scholastic performance. These may be overwhelming to some teenagers as they undergo this critical stage in their lives.

For those who can’t adjust and handle the pressure, the use of illicit drugs becomes an enticing option to cope with, alleviate or escape from the issues that beset them. This is one of the primary reasons why quite a large percentage of teenagers resort to drug abuse. Teen drug abuse has now become a common and prevalent problem in modern society. In fact, drug abuse is currently the foremost concern among parents as cited in the National Survey of American Attitudes on Substance Abuse.

Parents can’t possibly monitor their teens 24/7 without invading their privacy, and they can’t physically be present at all times, particularly in today’s fast paced world. So what exactly are the signs that parents should look for to keep their teens away from prohibited drugs?

The first thing to thing to look out for is the teen’s behavior. In general, a teenager will manifest behavior patterns quite different from his normal behavior prior to addiction. Parents should also be skeptical once their teenager starts to behave aberrantly and becomes withdrawn or aloof to other members of the family. They may also exhibit irritability, paranoia and violent behavior. However, such changes may not be drastic, but are the most obvious signs of drug abuse. Drug abuse has far-reaching effects on the user’s mood and performance. A teenage drug user will most likely suffer from long-term psychological effects from drugs that modify their mindset as well. As a consequence, a teenager can have degrading performance in school or in the workplace.

On the other hand, there are also physical signs of teen drug abuse that parents should be on the lookout for. Among the red light warning signs of the effects of teen drug abuse are blood-shot eyes, nagging cough, lethargy, irregularities in eating and sleeping habits, constantly tired or hyperactive, sudden weight loss or weight gain, teeth clenching and muscle tension, convulsions, dehydration, and consequently, death.

Teen drug abuse may start as a phase of experimentation in a teenager’s life, in their effort to adapt and resolve certain issues that typically highlight this crucial stage in their lives. Nevertheless, it could also spiral out of control and lead to serious and severe drug addiction that may even persist up to adulthood. This can be very debilitating and difficult to resolve. Teen drug abuse, when addressed during the initial stages can be rectified and lead to a better quality of life not only as a teenager, but ultimately as an adult as well.

    S-e-x
Bullying or abusing others
Video Games
How do I know this? Because I asked.

I’ve spoken to thousands of students across the U.S. and Canada about addictions. Each participant was asked: “What habits(s) do you most want to stop or reduce in your life right now?” The answers were startling.

A group of 265 students (Grades 7-12) anonymously listed 92 different destructive habits with which they were struggling – a total of 1031 times! This means that each child had an average of four habits from which they wanted FREEDOM.

The 12 most common addictive habits are listed above. The other 80 are equally as shocking. (for a full list visit www.thepowerofchoice.ca)

Who Are These Kids and Where Do They Come From?

For only 265 kids to self-identify 1031 bad habits and addictions seems incredible. But it’s true. Yet there was nothing unusual about the type of schools these kids came from and the communities they lived in ranged from low-to-high income.

Often, these weren’t your typical “at-risk” students, referred by school officials, guidance counselors or parents. And for school staff, it was an eye opener. Many had been unaware of how many students were suffering in silence, and were stunned to hear of the multitude of addictive behaviors.

How do we reach these Kids?

As a school speaker, I am fully aware that trying to scare students out of experimenting with dangerous or illegal activities is not the most effective approach.

That’s why I use my personal story of addiction in a different way — as a way of connecting my own challenges, pain and choices with theirs, so as to inspire those in pain to attend my healthy habits workshop and 28-day program.

What I’ve discovered is that kids relate to this. Yes, many are alienated or angry. Those with serious behaviours and addictions are afraid, and they’re desperate for a way out. But when someone is honest and direct with them, and has practical answers to the problems they’re facing, they are ready to listen.

How Much “Choice” Do We Really Have?

What I’ve recognized and teach kids in my workshops is that being a victim is a choice. Yes, we may have been “victimized” and experienced bad things in our lives. But how we look at those events now is up to us.

As a teenager, my choices led me to become and stay addicted. By transforming what was behind my addictions and becoming responsible for the decisions I had made, I am now able to live free of addictions, rather than as a victim of my past.

Applying this in our Schools

What I want students to know is that they have this same choice. My workshops help kids shift their attention and energy away from the seemingly hopeless nature of their “bad habits,” and redirect it towards developing healthy habits.

We focus on their power to choose, to support others, and be supported by a community and buddy system, while reducing their bad habits until they get to abstinence (if that is what they choose).

This message encourages and enables young people to make far more change than any threats or negative statistics could ever do. And the results are proving very positive.

Final Words

I believe it’s up to us, as adults, to teach kids to take responsibility for the choices that affect their lives, and to offer them practical steps that will give them positive results. And the best way to teach that is to do it for ourselves.

As Gandhi said, “be the change you want to see in the world.”

According to National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services there are anywhere between 40-60,000 people in a treatment center a month in Texas alone. Now, that is a lot of people struggling with some form of drug abuse. Among that number we see that around 27-30% of those in treatment centers are teenagers. I think it is safe to say that we are living among a generation that is affected by the use of some form of substance. It is hard for any teen to not know a family member or friend that has either used or is using some from of drug.

Another report by SAS output, another government organization, showed that the only other age group that had a higher percentage of users then those ranging from 12-17 years old were those who were between 20-30 years old. Which is scary to think about, since this is probably a result or continuation of teenagers abusing drugs well after they enter adulthood.

In another report produced by Substance Report Trends For 2009

Important changes to drug patterns in Texas include increases in heroin inhalation by younger Hispanics. This was first noticed with the “cheese heroin”, which is a mixture of Tylenol and heroin, situation in Dallas, but further investigation has found that heroin inhalation is increasing statewide. Some treatment admissions are young teenagers who are not novices and are using other illicit drugs, and those in their twenties are shifting to injecting.

The availability of cocaine decreased in the last half of 2008 due to violence and gang warfare on the border. The methamphetamine indicators have changed since 2005, with supplies down, prices increasing, and purity decreasing…The magnitude of the substance abuse and mental health problem on the border is of serious concern.

Living in Texas presents itself with many opportunities for teenagers to get their hands on drugs. There is no short supply with us living on the border of drug flowing into our state, leaving it wide open for teenagers to find and use these drugs. Illicit drugs continue to enter from Mexico through cities such as El Paso, Laredo, McAllen, and Brownsville, as well as through smaller towns along the border. The drugs then move northward for distribution through Dallas/Fort Worth and Houston. In addition, drugs move eastward from San Diego through Lubbock and from El Paso to Amarillo and Dallas/Fort Worth.

So that leaves open a lot of cities receiving drug flowing in and out and lot of teens with access to these drugs.

The Texas School Survey of Substance Abuse: Grades 7-12, 2008 reported that lifetime use of powder and crack cocaine had dropped from a high of 9 percent in 1998 to 7 percent in 2008, while past month use dropped from 4 percent in 1998 to 2 percent in 2008. Some 6 percent of students in non-border counties had ever used powder or crack/cocaine, and 2 percent had used it in the past month. In comparison, students in schools on the Texas border reported higher levels of cocaine use-10 percent lifetime and 4 percent past month.

Alcohol is the primary drug of abuse in Texas. In 2008, 63 percent of Texas secondary school students (grades 7-12) had ever used alcohol, and 30 percent had drunk alcohol in the last month. Lifetime use decreased by 5 percent and past-month use decreased by 3 percent between 2006 and 2008. The problems really never change over the years with only reflections in %’s either going up or down. But we continue to see the damaging effects these drugs bring to the teenagers who abuse drugs.

On our web-sight we provide a quick report that has some tangible things you can do tonight with your teen when you discover they are using. But I would also advice if you find yourself in a situation where your teen is using drugs that you find a great recovery program. One here in Houston, Texas is called Life Way. You can Google them.
Marijuana is popularly called cannabis, pot, weed, dope, hash, grass, draw etc, it has many different names. After continued use over a long period of time marijuana can lead to addiction. Marijuana addiction often creeps up on people, it’s something that people often fall into and don’t even realise that they are addicted, because they don’t realise it’s possible to be addicted to cannabis.

Some people who are addicted to marijuana even need professional rehabilitation, in fact over 500,000 Americans go to rehab for marijuana addiction every year. Going to a rehab centre helps with round-the-clock monitoring and a professional understanding of your condition.

Hypnosis has become extremely popular lately as a complimentary option for those undergoing treatment for marijuana addiction. Hypnosis can be tried in two ways. You can go to a hypnotherapist practitioner, or you can buy a CD or mp3 that help you with self-hypnosis in your own home. They both work in the same way but seeing a therapist will cost you a lot more money.

The technique of hypnotherapy effects major changes in your habits by routing messages straight to the subconscious. Therefore, you develop a liking for certain habits and dislike for others. This helps you follow a certain pattern of behaviour without as much effort. Hypnosis cannot however, interfere with your ethical ideas. It’s recognised to be safe and cannot make you do something that you do not want to. It’s not a forum of magic Jedi mind control.

Whether you use self-hypnosis with a CD or visit a therapist, it works by putting you in a trance, this is just a state of deep relaxation. Messages are sent to your subconscious only after you are completely relaxed, with your subconscious alert to any suggestions. Music with certain frequencies to heighten and sustain your trance is also used. Sometimes you may fall asleep during a hypnosis session. After putting you through the trance and giving your subliminal messages, the therapist or CD will wake you up.

If you visit a hypnotherapist your sessions may be scheduled thrice a week. A CD for self-hypnosis can be used thrice in a day if you wish. Either way, to actually benefit from hypnosis to treat marijuana addiction you must remain regular with your sessions. Most hypnosis treatments last for a couple of months. A minimum of 60-day usage is recommended with CDs for self-hypnosis.

Marijuana withdrawal symptoms can range from physical tension and irritability to mood swings, depression and complete loss of appetite. Hypnosis can compliment any treatment for de-addiction and is helpful in most cases.

Hypnosis should always be used in conjunction with exercise, family support, commitment to give up the addiction and an effective support network. Hypnosis will often make the healing process more effective and speed up the results.

Success with hypnosis will vary depending on your susceptibility, some will go deeper into trance than others and are more susceptible to suggestion, but many will experience a significant effect. Obviously will power will still be required. A mp3 download or CD wont cost you much more than a bag of dope and can be used as many times as you like.

If you have found yourself dealing with alcoholism marriage issues and problems, you may be wondering where you can turn to for help, guidance and assistance. You may be married to an alcoholic, but you love your spouse and you want to make the most appropriate decisions not only for your husband and wide but also for yourself and the rest of your family.

When considering alcoholism marriage problems, one of the primary resources that is available to you today is Al-Anon. At its Internet website, Al-Anon has set out its primary purposes very succinctly:

”Al-Anon offers understanding help; support to families and friends of problem drinkers. Our program is adapted from Alcoholics Anonymous and is based upon the Twelve Steps, Twelve Traditions and Twelve Concepts of Service.”

Today, there are active Al-Anon chapters all over the world. If you reside in a city or town that has an AA chapter, you probably also have an Al-Anon chapter. Considering and understanding all that is involved with alcoholism marriage problems and issues, AA and Al-Anon go hand in hand.

Beyond Al-Anon, if you are the spouse of a problem drinker or alcoholic who is experiencing many alcoholism marriage problems, you might also want to consider obtaining counseling for yourself. There are counselors and therapists that now deal specifically with the difficult alcoholism marriage issues.

Finally, when it comes to alcoholism marriage matters, you need to understand that you alone cannot change the life of an alcoholic partner. Your significant other is going to have to want to make changes in his or her own life. Indeed, as many experts say, a person afflicted with alcoholism may have to hit rock bottom before individual seeks assistance and changes his or her life. The key is not to let yourself get dragged down in the process.

Teen alcohol rehab programs have a whole-hearted approach towards curbing the menace of alcohol addiction that is putting the future of our country in doldrums. An alcohol teen rehab in Florida has said that parents should be watchful and monitor what their kids are doing, so that they are able to guide them on the right track, to prevent them from being way-laid.

Some of the signs that are identifiable with a teen who is getting into a steady drinking habit include the presence of alcohol paraphernalia in the home(bottles, cans, bottle caps, bottle openers etc), missing items and money from the house, lying on the part of teens to cover up something, falling grades, change of circle of friends etc. The physical symptoms include foul breath of alcohol on the breath and the body, pale skin, abusive behavior, avoiding interaction with family members, bloodshot eyes etc.

Here are some of the reasons why teens take to drinking alcohol, according to a teen treatment center in Jacksonville, Florida.

Peer pressure and party culture: Teens love to have a good time and one of the best ways to ‘express’ the feeling of a good time is over a round of drinks. Yes, teens ape adults and many of them think that a party or event is not worth it if there is no alcohol in it. Flawed thinking but it is a popular perception.
Parental issues: Kids who come from broken families or from a background where parents are always at loggerheads tend to make them stressed out. It is natural to feel deeply anguished and stressed at times and one of the ways they try to vent it out is by taking alcohol, which can very well, turn into an addiction. Sometimes, there are also cases where parents tend to be too lenient or indifferent which make teens lead lives the way they want.
Thrill seeking attitude: Teens believe that soft drinks are for kids and if they want to be adults and enjoy the highs of life, alcohol should be an integral part of the event. Such kind of skewed thinking can definitely be problematic to the adolescent’s personality and affect his behavior in the society.
Miserable situations: Relationship problems, over expectations and general failure in life can make them to alcohol as well.

You have to be an inspiring parent to your child; not someone who is overly strict or indifferent It is not an easy job to be a good parent; handling a teenager does require a lot of responsibility. In today’s fast paced life, it may not so be convenient to keep a watch on your kid all the time and it is possible that behind your back, he or she may indulge in alcohol. Well, a small drink occasionally at times may not do much harm but then one does not know when an occasional tryst can develop into an addiction which can ruin your teen’s health. So make sure you take your teen to a good teen alcohol treatment facility, where he or she can be treated well so that there is no further risk of indulging into such type of addiction again.
