One of the greatest, but too often unspoken, dangers of teen drug use and addiction is the high risk of suicide that tends to accompany it. Teens who use drugs regularly are more likely to consider suicide as well as to act upon their thoughts. According to the American Psychiatric Association, many teens suffer from depression. In many cases, teens will often “self-medicate” with drugs in order to avoid exposing themselves and their problems to adults. The use of drugs does not alleviate the problems, but instead, usually aggravate them, leaving the teen with a feeling of helplessness and hopelessness. This places them at greater risk for suicide attempts. Drug use and dependency clouds judgment, and lowers the teen’s natural survival instinct. Drug use affects the chemical balance of the brain, intensifying feelings of sadness, depression and loneliness. Periods of withdrawal from the drug, and intense feelings of crashing profoundly affect the young person’s mind and mood. While these factors exist in adult addicts, they are more intensified in the young adult and teen, particularly due to his dependency upon adults.

In addition, a frequent user of drugs already has the means at his disposal to act on suicidal thoughts. Overdosing is one of the easiest and most common methods of suicide. Suicide is the third leading cause of death amongst young people from the ages of fifteen to twenty-four. Some experts suggest that as many as ninety percent of those teens who commit suicide abuse drugs, though others estimate that the number is closer to between fifty- three and sixty percent. Teens, especially today, are under a tremendous amount of pressure. Caught in the crossroads between childhood and adulthood, teens are filled with conflicts about themselves, their identity, and their place in the world. These factors, coupled with their perception that the adult world doesn’t or can’t, understand their angst, leave them vulnerable and isolated. These factors contribute to both addiction and suicidal intention, both of which also feed on the other.

Methods for treating a teen with suicidal intentions are very similar to treating teens with addictions. Most of the root causes are quite similar. The most important thing for an adult to provide the teen, is an avenue of communication. It is important that the teen feel that he has someone to turn towards to express his feelings and problems. He or she need to feel that they are not isolated. There are people who care about them. They are not the only one who is struggling with these problems. If a teen does not believe this, then no other treatment can truly be effective. However, this is of course, only the first step. The teen needs to receive professional guidance and possibly medical treatment to deal with his addiction.

No matter the cause and solution, the connection between teen substance addiction and suicide is too strong to stand to the side. Of course there has always been preventative programs centering around education, but more active steps need to be planned. In truth the most successful stoppage of teen drug use, is showing the young person that true pleasure comes from hard work and not the quick fix of drug use. If this can be accomplished then the teen will over time turn from addictive substances lower his or her risk of suicide.

Does every teen go through that stage of doing bad things?(drugs, not listening, drinking, that stuff)?
I am 13 and am going through this early! I am only a freshman and doing all that. I am wondering if every teen tries drugs, and drinks and doesn't listen and all of that?? But my parents are so stupid they don't notice and I've been doing all of this for almost a year( I am about to turn 14 so right after I turned 13 I started)

Before you start this important conversation talking to your kids about drugs, you must remember, this conversation isn’t about you in the first place. This is about your kid and to warn them on the dangers of using drugs. If you remember this from the start, you wont be afraid to say or feel whats on your mind.

You also can’t be afraid to speak out just in case your kid come out and ask you did you do drugs when you were young because it might happen. In my opinion, you should tell the truth right from the start. This way you wont risk losing credibility if your kid somehow find out that you did do drugs in the past. You either give a honest answer or no answer at all.

The point you’re trying to make should be what really matters. Don’t beat around the bush – let them understand you don’t want them to use drugs and definately give your reasons why. I feel that if you dont give them a reason they just might do it anyway. If you have a lot of reasons that can last all day that’s even better.

Let your kid know what you have learned being around the culture where drugs are a fact of life. You can talk about examples on TV, or if you have an experience of your own. If you seen too many examples of how drugs can change a person life for the worse. Just let your kid know what you have learned.

Make sure you ask them if they feel pressured into using drugs because some of their friends are experimenting with to try to make you fit in. If thats the case, let them know that’s never a very good reason to do drugs.

When you do talk to your kid, you will anticipate that your child first reaction about drugs will be very quiet. You want a two way conversation about the subject. Ask them what do they think? Ask them if it’s a subject their friends talk about? Ask them what they think of celebrities who use drugs. Keep asking questions and listen to the answers.

Before you even start this conversation, you better be calm and try not to raise your voice. If you do lose your temper, try to catch yourself. If the situation is not going well, suggest talking about it another time. It’s okay to admit to them that talking about this conversation is not easy for you either.

To sum this up, it’s very difficult to even know how to talk to your kids about drugs. The most important aspect of the whole situation you have to remember, this is about your child’s future and hopefully when you talk to them it should be much easier for yourself. Good Luck!

Teen abstinence? Just ’saying no’ doesn’t work. Education does!

There are some surely well meaning people, who think that teen abstinence is a concept that this raging hormone group will adopt, just because it’s what they’re told to do. If they won’t clean their room, what makes you think they’re going to accept the teen abstinence directive? It’s like asking a bird not to fly, a dog not to bark or the wind to cease. If you think this will work, then you are the one with your head in the sand. Ostriches don’t fly, BTW. So, what works?

Educating teens is the answer. Remember, this is the age group that disputes the necessity of almost everything that’s good for them! However, this doesn’t mean that a few salient facts won’t get through. Guilt may be induced through moral avenues of argument, but there are some hard-hitting facts and reasons that will give them pause, when nothing else does.

Moral and religious arguments may carry some weight while you’re talking, but in the heat of the moment, kids are not thinking of that chat. This is where the concept of teen abstinence is about the furthest idea from their mind. It’s not that kids don’t want to go along with the idea, they simply don’t have the discipline, experience or inclination.

A more practical approach yields a better measure of success. For example, some parents are reluctant to talk to their teens about sexual matters. They don’t know how to bring up the subject naturally. There are websites which give parents ideas on how to talk to kids about sex. Take a look at some of these and find an approach which is comfortable for you and your child.

A fact-finding perspective can be most valuable. You may cringe at the thought of talking about STDs, AIDS and teenage pregnancy. This is an outdated attitude. However unfortunate, kids know all about the sexual mores actually in practice, from their classmates. Teen culture doesn’t have a lot of adherents to teen abstinence. This is the blind leading the blind.

Today, there are a number of sexually transmitted diseases which can cause problems for a lifetime. According to current statistics, fully 20% of our population is afflicted with herpes! While medication is available to help manage this disease, there are significant risks associated with taking the medication, with no guarantee of not infecting their partner. AIDS is incurable and can be transmitted through a single sexual encounter. As for pregnancy, a teen is simply not emotionally equipped to be a parent – not yet. If you talk to your teenager on a purely practical level, it won’t be hard to convince them that life will change radically and for their lifetime.

You may be shocked to know that most teens can relate to the responsibilities and constraints parenthood presents. More than likely, they know someone who is a teenage parent and are well aware of how that friend’s life is changed by an imprudent moment and lack of discipline.

Promoting teen abstinence requires that you, the parent, get a reality check. Do a little research and lay it all out for them to digest. Kids do have common sense. It’s up to you to structure the facts so that it’s irrefutable, morals and religion notwithstanding. Now the issue of teen abstinence still inserts the moral or religious element, with an indisputable host of real-life reasons that stick.

Teen Mental Health

Teen mental health problems are more common than most people want to admit. As parents, we want to think that our children are normal, if not perfect. Although this is generally far from the truth even in the most healthy families, learning that you have a child with a severe mental illness can be completely devastating for parents. When my Johnny started having Teen mental health issues, I would not even admit it to myself. I figured that he was just going through a phase. Nonetheless, when he started engaging in self-destructive behaviors, losing contact with the family, and getting worse and worse grades, I knew that something had to be done. I finally faced my worst fear. My son was not normal. He was a good child, but he needed professional psychiatric care.

Of course, finding a good doctor for him was extremely difficult. In many communities, there is a severe shortage of decent Teen mental health care. Acute care was alright – there was a hospital that would take him in almost immediately – but finding the sort of long-term care that I really felt he needed was more difficult. Teen mental health problems often do improve within a few weeks to a few years, but that still leaves the problem of finding treatment in the meantime. You want the best psychiatrist for your Teen – someone who can be a mentor and role model as well as an excellent doctor. It has to be a decision you take together too. You need to balance your observations and the opinions of your teenager to find someone who they can really work with.

The psychiatrist that I found was an expert in treating Teen mental health disorders. He treated teenagers with bipolar disorder, acute anxiety disorder, schizophrenia, and many other health problems. He actually worked on a referral basis with the acute treatment clinic that my son went to, so I got his name after the first doctor didn’t work out. I could tell that my kid liked him a lot, and I held him in the highest esteem. It seemed like the first good break that we had gotten since this whole ordeal began, and I was optimistic that more positive developments would follow.

It turns out that I was right. Basically, Teen mental health disorders come in two flavors. There are the disorders that are simply the product of Teens – anxiety, depression, and that sort of thing – and those which become active during adolescence and then don’t go away. If my son had had schizophrenia or some other chronic disease, the prognosis would have been quite a bit bleaker. As an Teen with chronic anxiety and depression problems, however, he wasn’t destined to face lifelong troubles in the same way.
