Alcohol addiction among teenagers is one of the worst things that is happening all over the world. The surveys and special studies reveal that the number of teenagers addicted with alcohol is growing very fast. The problems associated with teen alcohol abuse are many in number and that is why it becomes difficult to give proper treatment to them to overcome their addiction.

Teen alcohol abuse in Louisiana is quite as worse as in any other state in America. In Louisiana the teenagers are not only addicted to alcohol but they are also into various other addictions, making the alcohol abuse problem more complicated. Because of these associated problems, the treatment centers for teen alcohol abuse in Louisiana are finding it tougher to deal with the issue.

There are many teen alcohol abuse centers in Louisiana but the number of teenagers taking treatment for them is considerably low. The various problems associated with teen alcohol abuse are listed below along with the proper solutions that the addiction centers are applying to overcome the problem.

1.	The most troublesome problem is that of binary addiction. The meaning of binary addiction is, the teenagers are having some other addictive substance along with having alcohol. This way they are not only an alcohol addict but have other addictions too. This scenario is common in teen alcohol abuse in Louisiana.

Once the teenagers start consuming alcohol, in order to get more pleasure they start consuming it in greater quantities. To get more pleasure while having alcohol, they might also start having some other drug. Thus, their condition goes from bad to worse with this dual addiction.

To overcome this problem, the teen alcohol abuse center in Louisiana gives detox treatment as the first part of their treatment. The teenager will need to undergo detox treatment. In detox treatment the patient will have to stay away from any kind of addiction and their body will get cleaned and even the single drop of the addictive substance will be removed from their body. The detox treatment can take care of the binary conditions of the patient too.

2.	Teenager start consuming alcohol due to many reasons. Some take it to relieve their stress and get away from the tensions of their life while others take it under peer pressure. In the early phase, the teenagers consume less alcohol but as the time passes they get addicted to it and cannot manage without consuming alcohol. Many teenagers have fallen into the pit of alcohol addiction unknowingly about what harm they can get by alcohol addiction.

The treatment centers in Louisiana, knows the way to tackle this problem goes through education. That’s why these centers try to educate the youth about the various aspects of alcohol abuse. The youth will be given proper guidance about what alcohol addiction is all about and what bad effects it causes in the body and mind of the alcohol addict.

The youth will also be given guidance on how they are playing with their future and their family’s future by giving into the demands of their peer group. The teenagers who are into alcohol addiction will be given counseling and after that they will need to undergo detox treatment to remove the alcohol that is already accumulated in their bodies.

3.	Many teenagers think that their parents are too busy and they feel neglected. This is one more cause of teenagers getting into addiction. Parents are also unaware about the things that they can do in order to keep their children away from any kind of addiction. Many parents are themselves setting a wrong example before their children and their children’s are just following what they see their parent do.

That is why, the treatment center in Louisiana arranges parental counseling. Parents too need to know what they can do to keep their children away from addiction. The parents will be given guidance on how they can set a good example before their children. All the doubts that the parents may have can be solved in these counseling sessions. Most of the teen alcohol abuse center in Louisiana has three-day parental counseling session. In these sessions, the parents of these young patients get a chance to interact with each other and share their experiences.

Teen suicide is becoming more common every year in South America. In fact, only car accidents and homicides (murders) kill more people between the ages of 18 and 30, making suicide the third leading cause of death in teens and overall in youths ages 14 to 22 years old.

Thinking About Suicide It’s common for teens to think about death to some degree. Teens’ thinking capabilities have matured in a way that allows them to think more deeply – about their existence in the world, the meaning of life, and other profound questions and ideas. Unlike kids, teens realize that death is permanent. They may begin to consider spiritual or philosophical questions such as what happens after people die. To some, death, and even suicide, may seem poetic (consider Romeo and Juliet, for example). To others, death may seem frightening or be a source of worry. For many, death is mysterious and beyond our human experience and understanding.

Thinking about suicide goes beyond normal ideas teens may have about death and life. Wishing to be dead, thinking about suicide, or feeling helpless and hopeless about how to solve life’s problems are signs that a teen may be at risk – and in need of help and support. Beyond thoughts of suicide, actually making a plan or carrying out a suicide attempt is even more serious.

What makes some teens begin to think about suicide – and even worse, to plan or do something with the intention of ending their own lives? One of the biggest factors is depression. Suicide attempts are usually made when a person is seriously depressed or upset. A teen who is feeling suicidal may see no other way out of problems, no other escape from emotional pain, or no other way to communicate their desperate unhappiness.

The Link Between Depression and Suicide

The majority of suicide attempts and suicide deaths happen among teens with depression. Consider these statistics about teen suicide and teen depression: about 1% of all teens attempts suicide and about 1% of those suicide attempts results in death (that means about 1 in 10,000 teens dies from suicide). But for adolescents who have depressive illnesses, the rates of suicidal thinking and behavior are much higher. Most teens who have depression think about suicide, and between 15% and 30% of teens with serious depression who think about suicide go on to make a suicide attempt.

Keep in mind that most of the time for most teens depression is a passing mood. The sadness, loneliness, grief, and disappointment we all feel at times are normal reactions to some of the struggles of life. With the right support, some resilience, an inner belief that there will be a brighter day, and decent coping skills, most teens can get through the depressed mood that happens occasionally when life throws them a curve ball.

But sometimes depression doesn’t lift after a few hours or a few days. Instead it lasts, and it can seem too heavy to bear. When someone has a depressed or sad mood that is intense and lingers almost all day, almost every day for 2 weeks or more, it may be a sign that the person has developed major depression. Major depression, sometimes called clinical depression, is beyond a passing depressed mood – it is the term mental health professionals use for depression that has become an illness in need of treatment. Another form of serious depression is called bipolar disorder, which includes extreme low moods (major depression) as well as extreme high moods (these are called manic episodes).

Though children can experience depression, too, teens are much more vulnerable to major depression and bipolar illness. Hormones and sleep cycles, which both change dramatically during adolescence, have an effect on mood and may partly explain why teens (especially girls) are particularly prone to depression. Believe it or not, as many as 20% of all teens have had depression that’s this severe at some point. The good news is that depression is treatable – most teens get better with the right help.

It’s not hard to see why serious depression and suicide are connected. Serious depression (with both major depression and bipolar illness) involves a long-lasting sad mood that doesn’t let up, and a loss of pleasure in things you once enjoyed. It also involves thoughts about death, negative thoughts about oneself, a sense of worthlessness, a sense of hopelessness that things could get better, low energy, and noticeable changes in appetite or sleep.

Depression also distorts a person’s viewpoint, allowing them to focus only on their failures and disappointments and to exaggerate these negative things. Depressed thinking can convince someone there is nothing to live for. The loss of pleasure that is part of depression can seem like further evidence that there’s nothing good about the present. The hopelessness can make it seem like there will be nothing good in the future; helplessness can make it seem like there’s nothing you can do to change things for the better. And the low energy that is part of depression can make every problem (even small ones) seem like too much to handle.

When major depression lifts because a person gets the proper therapy or treatment, this distorted thinking is cleared and they can find pleasure, energy, and hope again. But while someone is seriously depressed, suicidal thinking is a real concern. When teens are depressed, they often don’t realize that the hopelessness they feel can be relieved and that hurt and despair can be healed.

What Else Puts Teens at Risk for Suicide?

In addition to depression, there are other emotional conditions that can put teens at greater risk for suicide – for example, girls and guys with conduct disorder are at higher risk. This may be partly because teens with conduct disorder have problems with aggression and may be more likely than other teens to act in aggressive or impulsive ways to hurt themselves when they are depressed or under great stress. The fact that many teens with conduct disorder also have depression may partly explain this, too. Having both serious depression and conduct disorder increases a teen’s risk for suicide.

Substance abuse problems also put teens at risk for suicidal thinking and behavior. Alcohol and some drugs have depressive effects on the brain. Misuse of these substances can bring on serious depression, especially in teens prone to depression because of their biology, family history, or other life stressors.

Besides depressive effects, alcohol and drugs alter a person’s judgement. They interfere with the ability to assess risk, make good choices, and think of solutions to problems. Many suicide attempts occur when a teen is under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Teens with substance abuse problems often have serious depression or intense life stresses, too, further increasing their risk.

Life Stress and Suicidal Behavior

Let’s face it – being a teen is not easy for anyone. There are many new social, academic, and personal pressures. And for teens who have additional problems to deal with, life can feel even more difficult. Some teens have been physically or sexually abused, have witnessed one parent abusing another at home, or live with lots of arguing and conflict at home. Others witness violence in their neighborhoods. Many teens have parents who divorce, and others may have a parent with a drug or alcohol addiction.

Some teens are struggling with concerns about sexuality and relationships, wondering if their feelings and attractions are normal, if they will be loved and accepted, or if their changing bodies are developing normally. Others struggle with body image and eating problems, finding it impossible to reach a perfect ideal, and therefore having trouble feeling good about themselves. Some teens have learning problems or attention problems that make it hard for them to succeed in school. They may feel disappointed in themselves or feel they are a disappointment to others.

All these things can affect mood and cause some people to feel depressed or to turn to alcohol or drugs for a false sense of soothing. Without the necessary coping skills or support, these social stresses can increase the risk of serious depression and, therefore, of suicidal ideas and behavior. Teens who have had a recent loss or crisis or who had a family member who committed suicide may be especially vulnerable to suicidal thinking and behavior themselves.

Guns and Suicide Risk

Finally, having access to guns is extremely risky for any teen who has any of the other risk factors. Depression, anger, impulsivity, life stress, substance abuse, feelings of alienation or loneliness – all these factors can place a teen at major risk for suicidal thoughts and behavior. Availability of guns along with one or more of these risk factors is a deadly equation. Many teen lives could be saved by making sure those who are at risk don’t have access to guns.

Different Types of Suicidal Behaviors

Teen girls attempt suicide far more often (about nine times more often) than teen guys, but guys are about four times more likely to succeed when they try to kill themselves. This is because teen guys tend to use more deadly methods, like guns or hanging. Girls who try to hurt or kill themselves tend to use overdoses of medications or cutting. More than 60% of teen suicide deaths happen with a gun. But suicide deaths can and do occur with pills and other harmful substances and methods.

Sometimes a depressed person plans a suicide in advance. Many times, though, suicide attempts are not planned in advance, but happen impulsively, in a moment of feeling desperately upset. Sometimes a situation like a breakup, a big fight with a parent, an unintended pregnancy, being harmed by abuse or rape, being outed by someone else, or being victimized in any way can cause a teen to feel desperately upset. In situations such as these, teens may fear humiliation, rejection, social isolation, or some terrible consequence they think they can’t handle. If a terrible situation feels too overwhelming, a teen may feel that there is no way out of the bad feeling or the consequences of the situation. Suicide attempts can occur under conditions like this because, in desperation, some teens – at least for the moment – see no other way out and they impulsively act against themselves.

Sometimes teens who feel or act suicidal mean to die and sometimes they don’t. Sometimes a suicide attempt is a way to express the deep emotional pain they’re feeling in hopes that someone will get the message they are trying to communicate.

Even though a teen who makes a suicide attempt may not actually want or intend to die, it is impossible to know whether an overdose or other harmful action they may take will actually result in death or cause a serious and lasting illness that was never intended. Using a suicide attempt to get someone’s attention or love or to punish someone for hurt they’ve caused is never a good idea. People usually don’t really get the message, and it often backfires on the teen. It’s better to learn other ways to get what you need and deserve from people. There are always people who will value, respect, and love you – sure, sometimes it takes time to find them – but it is important to value, respect, and love yourself, too.

Unfortunately, teens who attempt suicide as an answer to problems tend to try it more than once. Though some depressed teens may first attempt suicide around age 13 or 14, suicide attempts are highest during middle adolescence. Then by about age 17 or 18, the rate of teen suicide attempts lowers dramatically. This may be because with maturity, teens have learned to tolerate sad or upset moods, have learned how to get support they need and deserve, and have developed better coping skills to deal with disappointment or other difficulties.

Did you know that 17.4 percent of teenagers in the U.S. in the ages 12 to 19 are overweight? Adult Type 2 diabetes and heart disease are now being reported among teenagers, all the more reason for teenagers to be vigilant with their health. Moreover, sexually active teenagers face even more health risks than those that do not engage in sexual activity yet. Alcohol and substance abuse and smoking, eating disorders, depression, and sexually transmitted diseases are some of the most common health issues among teenagers.

To stay healthy, a teenager should avoid smoking any type of tobacco product. Another health advice is to avoid second hand cigarette smoke. A tobacco user teen is more likely to get heart disease, cancer or stroke in his/her adult age compared to nonuser. Avert alcohol and substance abuse. It usually starts with experimentation until the drug grabs hold of your mind and you become addicted.

Perhaps more common to teenage girls, a teen wants skinny body like ones she sees on the media. This perverted addiction to media leads to eating disorder, anorexia (intense fear of being fat) and bulimia (vomiting to abort the digestion of food ingested), which poses serious health problem among 1% of American teens; it can kill. If you have symptoms of anorexia and bulimia, don’t ignore it. Ask help from your parents or any authority you trust to help you quit this potentially deadly habit. Although support groups can help; however, kicking this deadly habit may require seeing a trained therapist.

Another teen health problem to watch is depression. It can be triggered by something as simple as not making the football team or the cheer leading squad. If you feel lazy, sad, and sometimes hopeless; or worse, if you feel suicidal, then you might be suffering from depression. This is a serious problem that you need to address immediately by talking to your parents or your guidance councilor. Talking to your peers about it may not be as good a solution because they may not know on how to handle depression, worse if they themselves are suffering depression too. Talk to your parents, teachers, or any authority you feel comfortable confiding with.

Sexually transmitted disease (STD) is a problem among sexually active teenagers. Some STDs such as Hepatitis can even be contracted by mere kissing. Teenagers already active in sex must visit their school nurse’s office and ask him/her the repercussions of sexual intercourse. If your parents are open to this discussion, you should talk to them about it too. Obtain brochures and pamphlets on safe sex to educate yourself everything you need to know about the health issues of sex. Teenage pregnancy, which in itself has emotional, social, and health ramifications, is a great possibility among sexually active teenagers.

Perhaps the best way to stay healthy and fit is to maintain a habit of good, well balanced diet, and exercise. Stay at bay from eating fatty foods and trans-fatty acids to avoid problems such as diabetes and obesity leading to heart problems. Joining sports and other outdoor activity is a fun way to exercise and to stay fit.

Are you looking for an alternative method, instead of a prescription, for your stressed-out teenager, at home? If you have researched natural methods to lower the levels of anxiety, and stress – Yoga is probably a top consideration, by now.

Before you make any quick decisions, you should discuss your options with your primary care or family physician. If you do not like what you hear, you can always get a second or third opinion. Sometimes, a prescription is a solution, but prescriptions can have side effects, so you want to be aware of all of them.

You can research any prescribed drug by entering the name of the drug, in a search engine, on the Internet. You will find details, forums, or lists of common, and not so common, side effects. You can also check with Web MD.

This is not meant to scare you, but to help you make an informed decision. There are times, when the local pharmacist knows more about the side effects of a prescription than anyone. So, it is worth your while to discuss the subject with him or her.

Prescribed medicine may also be addictive. In order to lower stress levels, CNS (central nervous system) depressants can be prescribed to slow the brain functions down. Some of these are very addictive, so this may be a temporary solution. Yet, prescription medicines are also life savers. Due to the quick results, prescription medicine may be your first choice.

In comparison, Yoga has no such side effects, but the positive results may take weeks or months to see. Depending upon the situation, Yoga may be used as an adjunctive therapy at first. Later on, Yoga may become the primary therapy for stress management.

Yoga has many uses, but establishing family bonds is a valuable part of the practice. What should you do if the family ties between a parent and child were not so strong to start with? Sometimes, a parent and teen are complete strangers to each other.

For example: What if the family became separated, went through a divorce, if the children were brought up by a day care system, or if one of the parents was so career-oriented that family ties were not a priority? It is never too late to re-establish family ties, but there is much repair to be done.

Yoga, and other non-competitive activities, give both parties a chance for joint participation, without an adult being portrayed as the controlling parent or teacher. Activities, which are non-competitive, such as Yoga, give both parent and teen some “breathing room.”

One point for estranged parents to be aware of is – it takes time and a long-term commitment to develop strong family ties. Joint participation, in Yoga classes, gives time to repair the relationship. At the same time, Yogic philosophy guides teens to develop many good health practices.

In Hatha Yoga classes, careful alignment of the spine is emphasized, muscles are strengthened, the body becomes balanced, flexibility is enhanced, and a sound mind is developed.

The value of a healthy spine is overlooked, by those who are lucky enough to take it for granted, but it is a crucial nervous center. The spinal maintenance aspect is a valuable habit to learn at a young age. Yoga practice helps to create some space between the vertebrae, thus extending the life of our spine, and helping us to stay pain free in our later years.

With all the emphasis on good health, and developing awareness, teens that practice Yoga are less likely to be pressured into substance abuse or “following the leader.”

As teens approach adulthood, some of the best gifts parents can bestow on them, beside love, are: Establishing good health habits, the ability to see things as they are, and the ability to think for themselves. Yoga prepares teens for all of their challenges.

Larry was a teenager who was in his 10th grade and was known to be quite good at his academics. It was obviously a big shock for people to find out that he was being taken to a teen treatment center for drug addiction treatment. He was seen begging people for money saying that he had no money on him and he had lost his way in the busy street. Larry would create a sad story saying that his wallet has been stolen and he has no money to go home. Some of them would give him money sympathetically, and he would use them to buy him some drugs. One day, he was found by his uncle tottered unsteadily trying to cross a busy street, under the influence of drugs. His parents were informed and he was taken to a teen rehab center.

Larry stayed alone with his grand-mother, his parents used to live in a different country. Since Larry had all the freedom do to what he wanted, he misused it by taking it to drugs. He had gone partying once and some of the people there asked him to try out a few drugs. He loved it and soon became addicted to heroin. Larry had a drug peddler who promised him drugs if he would help him in selling them. So the boy neglected his medicine and started subtly selling drugs to some people around the night club. If he felt that he was short on cash, he would ask people on streets to give money by concocting some story.

Larry was taken to a teen rehab center where he was treated with the best detox procedure; he was counseled well against drug addiction and soon it dawned on to him that he was actually destroying his education and his health in the process. Larry’s parents, who had flown all the way to make sure that the entire treatment process goes well, cooperated with the doctor. Soon in a matter of two months, Larry was fine, having benefited a lot from individual and group therapy. He said that he would cooperate with the law and give all the information about places he knew where drugs proliferated. He also gave the name and address of the person who sold him drugs and asked him to supply it to other people at night clubs. Both the police, the authorities and even the rehab were deeply perturbed by this, the extent to which teen drug addiction was being spreading in the country was condemnable.

Nevertheless, Larry found a huge difference in his health after being treated in a teen rehabilitation center. He is now an active college campaigner against teen drug abuse. He gives his example to teens and tells them to avoid taking drugs and alcohol at any cost. He said that if it were not for his uncle and the teen rehab program that changed his life, he wouldn’t have been able to survive. Just one person can make so much difference; it is high time teens gave up on drugs and start being high on positive things in life; after all, today’s teens are the future of this nation.

An alcohol addict in his or her teens can be an embarrassing thing to parents as well as the society. This is not the age to drink and lay sprawled on the footpath but the age to study, work and create a successful name and identity. But still there are many teens that do exactly the opposite and are alcohol addicts, according to teen recovery centers.

Teen alcohol addiction is something that cannot be neglected because there are way too many problems associated with this menace. Not only is the personal equation of the teen with adults and the society changed, but he or she also stands a chance to be caught by the law for creating problems in the society. Crimes of passion including homicides, stealing and killing people under wheels due to drunken driving are some of the cases that have been registered increasingly against irresponsible teens. All of these are just an addition to complicated set of health problems that a teen can suffer from.

Here are some ways in which a teen can become an alcohol addict:

Going to places where alcohol flourishes: Teens generally love to party and have a good time. Today most of the eating places, joints, clubs and pubs have a free flow of alcohol for people. Many believe that there is no party worth enjoying if there is no alcohol. There are also private parties at houses, where alcohol assumes center-stage among various events. So all of these can be breeding ground for interest in alcohol to foster.
Alcohol experimentation: Teens begin to experiment with various types of alcohol like rum, gin, vodka etc and even advice each other on how they can get a better ‘high’. All of these play on the minds of the teen and he/she begins to associate pleasurable sensations with drinking alcohol.
Increased intake of alcohol: This is the phase where according to most adolescent rehabilitation centers, a person becomes addicted. There is a change in the person’s group of friends. H shuns his old group and goes to another group which encourages alcohol drinking. There are chances that the person may just mix drugs and nicotine with alcohol.
High degree of addiction: This is the phase when the individual is sold to alcohol. He or she develops a lot of health problems; there are marked signs and symptoms that are identifiable with alcohol addiction. The teen may even face ridicule and suspension from school because he tends to creates problems in school with his grades falling steadily. Other parents do not allow their kids to mix with such a problem child. The teen who is too caught up with urge to drink more and more may even steal money and sell off things in order to arrange for alcohol. In some cases, the parents and the family of the teen may slap him and reprimand him, and he would revolt by running away from home and drinking excessively.
The fifth phase can be described as life-threatening when the teen begins to lose his sanity due to drinking. There are feelings of restlessness, breathlessness, depression and even suicidal tendencies that are possible due to alcohol addiction.

Make sure that you do not take teen alcohol addiction problems lightly and take your child to a teen rehab facility at the earliest.

Teen rehabilitation centers in the US have kept a steady tab on the rising cases of drug and alcohol abuse among teens. In fact, most of the authorities and sections that report on drug related cases find teen rehabs to be a valuable source of information. A teen rehab in Chicago maintains that parents have to tread cautiously while checking on their kids. They should not be strict enough to suffocate their freedom and not lenient enough to make them meander towards different kinds of vices. Parenting is an easy job if you just keep it simple and do not act irresponsibly in front of your kids.

Coming to the statistics that reflect teenage substance abuse, they are definitely alarming; jeopardizing the future of today. Parents these days are caught up in their tensions: rising debts, mortgage, and marital problems. Most of them do not know what is happening in the lives of their kids and the open; perverse culture perpetrated by the Internet and the media surely add fuel to the fire. Recent reports say that there are 3,600 teens who smoke nicotine every day. The most abused drug is Marijuana among teens, and those who have a colorful night life replete with parties are known to abuse the infamous ‘Ecstasy’. A shocking 30 percent of teens have admitted that they have abused at least one drug in 2007.

Anabolic steroids are also being taken by teens to increase performance and stay alert. But there can be many problems due to these: premature ageing, impotency in men, clitoral enlargement in women, skin diseases, acne, stunted growth etc. Premature ageing is something that accelerates 3 times faster for people who are abusing drugs. So, do not take teen substance abuse lightly and make sure that any teen who is suffering from such a problem is admitted into a teen rehab center where the best therapy can be given.

Teen treatment centers say that there are many reasons that can be cited for the increasing number of substance abuse. Teens are impressionable and have a rebellious streak in them; most of them want to toe the line of someone who is getting lucky. For instance, if one teen says that Ecstasy really works for getting physical with a girl, the others who are in the group take it on the face value and practice it. Lack of proper knowledge, peer pressure, pornography and violent films, teen anxiety and tensions and neglect by family and friends are some of the main reasons for teens to have a distorted view of life.

People who have abused drugs in their teenage life have even landed up with irreversible damage to their organs. Since some of the organs, especially reproductive organs are still being developed at puberty and adolescence; taking alcohol and drugs can harm the development. Substance abuse is known to pollute the blood with toxins, cause liver damage, kidney problems and nerve related ailments. The chances of turning schizophrenic, delusional and suffering from other mental problems inability to cope with stress and other daily pressures of life is something that is very much possible in a teen who is abusing drugs. The chances of relapse are also tough for someone who abuses alcohol and drugs at such a young age. So without hesitation, take your teenager to a teen drug rehab to get timely treatment.

Teen alcohol rehab programs have a whole-hearted approach towards curbing the menace of alcohol addiction that is putting the future of our country in doldrums. An alcohol teen rehab in Florida has said that parents should be watchful and monitor what their kids are doing, so that they are able to guide them on the right track, to prevent them from being way-laid.

Some of the signs that are identifiable with a teen who is getting into a steady drinking habit include the presence of alcohol paraphernalia in the home(bottles, cans, bottle caps, bottle openers etc), missing items and money from the house, lying on the part of teens to cover up something, falling grades, change of circle of friends etc. The physical symptoms include foul breath of alcohol on the breath and the body, pale skin, abusive behavior, avoiding interaction with family members, bloodshot eyes etc.

Here are some of the reasons why teens take to drinking alcohol, according to a teen treatment center in Jacksonville, Florida.

Peer pressure and party culture: Teens love to have a good time and one of the best ways to ‘express’ the feeling of a good time is over a round of drinks. Yes, teens ape adults and many of them think that a party or event is not worth it if there is no alcohol in it. Flawed thinking but it is a popular perception.
Parental issues: Kids who come from broken families or from a background where parents are always at loggerheads tend to make them stressed out. It is natural to feel deeply anguished and stressed at times and one of the ways they try to vent it out is by taking alcohol, which can very well, turn into an addiction. Sometimes, there are also cases where parents tend to be too lenient or indifferent which make teens lead lives the way they want.
Thrill seeking attitude: Teens believe that soft drinks are for kids and if they want to be adults and enjoy the highs of life, alcohol should be an integral part of the event. Such kind of skewed thinking can definitely be problematic to the adolescent’s personality and affect his behavior in the society.
Miserable situations: Relationship problems, over expectations and general failure in life can make them to alcohol as well.

You have to be an inspiring parent to your child; not someone who is overly strict or indifferent It is not an easy job to be a good parent; handling a teenager does require a lot of responsibility. In today’s fast paced life, it may not so be convenient to keep a watch on your kid all the time and it is possible that behind your back, he or she may indulge in alcohol. Well, a small drink occasionally at times may not do much harm but then one does not know when an occasional tryst can develop into an addiction which can ruin your teen’s health. So make sure you take your teen to a good teen alcohol treatment facility, where he or she can be treated well so that there is no further risk of indulging into such type of addiction again.

A teen wants to have a sense of belonging, a sense of self worth, a sense of pride. When this does not happen, a teenager turns to various vices like drugs, smoking, alcohol, etc. Teenagers usually start with a single cigarette or a can of beer, due to peer pressure, to prove himself or to give the impression of being â??coolâ?. This however turns into a habit and soon the teen is addicted. We have to launch a teen campaign against vices to help them and stop them.

Teenagers usually prefer to listen to their peers than to adults. They are in that phase of life where they are gaining independence and rebelling against adults. They therefore go to their friends and people in their age group, rather than to adults for advice and companionship. Therefore, when teen campaign against vices are organized and implemented by teenagers, the impact is much better.

Many teenagers have watched loved ones die from lung cancer. They have lived through the sufferings of their loved ones. Such teenagers are very strong campaigners against tobacco companies. Teenagers can be very effective campaigners as they are filled with vigor and enthusiasm. Teenagers, as part of their teen campaign against vices, can serve on community groups which seek tougher regulations against tobacco manufacturers.

They can discuss more stringent norms with the legislators. They can conduct surveys to find out why teenagers smoke. Most teenagers want to act like adults. They feel grown up with a cigarette in their mouth. Still others do it as a sign of rebellion. The campaigners can channel this rebellion into positive action by roping such children into assisting with the campaign and rebelling against tobacco companies. teen campaign against vices should focus on the fact that kids too have the power and ability to fight against tobacco companies.

Teenagers with low self esteem and those who find it hard to cope with the harsh realities of the world take to drugs. It is an escape route for them. Teenagers campaigning against drugs can highlight the horrifying after effects â?? depression, panic attacks, irregular heartbeat, respiratory disorders and even death.

Teenagers could have drug related discussions, seminars and conferences with their peers and point out the ill effects. The advantages of a healthy life could be highlighted and drug addicts could be encouraged to take up a sport to keep them healthy, channel their energies, become more disciplined and increase self confidence levels. Campaigners could also use pamphlets, catchy slogans, and stickers etc to spread their message.

Another vice rampant among teenagers is teen sex. Teen campaign against vices like teen sex should emphasize the horrors caused by AIDS and HIV which are ruining the lives of many teenagers. Delaying the first intercourse, promoting sexual abstinence among teenagers, avoiding early parenthood, responsible sexual behavior, contraception, sexually transmitted diseases etc could be topics covered in the teen campaign against vices. Teenagers must be taught to control their wants and be responsible people. Campaigners could use the media to promote their teen campaign against vices.

Underage drinking causes six times more deaths than all the other illicit drugs. Teens fall prey to alcohol as it is easily available. Many studies show that adults whom teenagers know, like parents, friendsâ?? parents, relatives etc provide them with alcohol. The campaign against alcohol should stress on the fact the underage drinking is illegal, irresponsible and unsafe. Campaigners could use lapel pins, public service announcements, print and audio visual advertisements to promote their teen campaign against vices.

Substance abuse refers to the overindulgence in drugs and dependence of other chemicals leading to effects that are detrimental to the individual’s physical and mental health, or the welfare of others.

The disorder is characterized by a pattern of continued pathological use of a medication that results in repeated adverse social consequences related to drug use, such as failure to meet work, family, or school obligations, interpersonal conflicts, or legal problems. There are on-going debates as to the exact distinctions between substance abuse and dependence, but current practice standard distinguishes between the two by defining substance dependence in terms of physiological and behavioral symptoms of substance use, and substance abuse in terms of the social consequences of substance use.

Substance abuse may lead to substance dependence. Both abuse and dependence are distinct from addictive behavior which involves a craving to continue using the substance despite the negative consequences. Dependence almost always implies abuse, but abuse frequently occurs without dependence, particularly when an individual first begins to abuse a substance. Dependence involves a biological response while substance abuse reflects a complex interaction between the individual, the abused substance and society.

Substance abuse is sometimes used as a synonym, but actually refers to the use of substances in a manner outside socio-cultural conventions. All use of illegal substances and all use of licit drugs in a manner not dictated by convention (e.g. according to physician’s orders or societal norms) is abuse according to this definition, however there is no universally accepted definition of substance abuse.

Recurrent substance use resulting in a failure to fulfill obligations at work, school, or home (e.g., repeated absences or poor work performance related to substance use; substance-related absences, suspensions or expulsions from school)

Recurrent substance use in situations in which it is physically hazardous (e.g., driving an automobile or operating a machine when impaired by substance use)

Recurrent substance-related legal problems (e.g., arrests for substance-related disorderly conduct

Continued substance use despite having persistent or recurrent social or interpersonal problems caused or exacerbated by the effects of the substance (e.g., arguments with friends about consequences of intoxication, physical fights)

Addiction was a term used to describe a devotion, attachment, dedication, inclination, etc. Nowadays, however, the term addiction is used to describe a recurring intense need by an individual to engage in some specific activity, despite harmful consequences to the individual’s health, mental state or social life. These compulsions can be gambling, eating disorders like overeating, and internet addiction.

When you are a teen who has weight problems, we have the solution for you, with the easy to follow weight loss plans for teens.

The most important thing for you is to stay away from all these unhealthy ways to reduce weight, like weight loss pills and stackers.

We will introduce you to some simple tips to follow weight loss plans for teens now:

Activities:
Most teens might not have the money to join a fitness club but what you can do is take part in activities that happen in school. This will give you at least enough opportunity to exercise each part of the body. Sports come in various choices when it comes to activities; i.e., soccer, softball, tennis, athletics and more.

Walking:
Exercise is one of the most effective ways to lose fat. The thing is that walking also keeps you fit and most importantly healthy.
Buy a pedometer and attach to your waist, this will help you to keep track of how much you have walked. Don’t start of with to long distances, but let your body accumulate to it. You can begin with a mile or so and then when you feel comfortable with it, you can increase this with a mile a week.

Avoid Eating Fast Food:
Avoiding fast food can be quite a difficult, especially for the teens because this type of food is simply addictive. The more fast food you eat, the more you want. Also carbonated drinks count in this matter. These drinks also have a side effect, sugary drinks makes your body want fat, and fat makes your body want something to drink. This is the outward spiral effect. Hence, it is very important to learn to eat healthy when you are young because once you get hooked onto fast food during your teens, it becomes really difficult to let go off this addiction. If you can bring up the courage to avoid fast food, this will help you as an adult.
Many adults who are overweight began starting to eat this fast food when they were young. Probably their parents did not know how to eat healthy, but this does not necessarily mean that you cannot change your habits. Always remember, life will be much easier if you learn to eat healthy when you are still young.

Exercises:
Exercises like fitness and aerobics, does not always mean that you have to build that perfect body with beautiful muscles all over. There are tons of things you can do to get some exercise right at the comfort of your own home. Do some light aerobic exercises in your living room. You can also get the whole family involved in an activity like this, because exercise is healthy for everyone regardless of their age or sex.
What matters for you is to get the whole body to move and so ultimately gets the heart to beat faster and pump more blood. That is exactly what will help you burn those extra calories.

Healthy Food:
Eating fresh, green vegetables is a sure good way of staying healthy. The benefit of this is that you get all the required vitamins and calories and lose weight in the process. Be sure you don’t go on an all out vegetarian diet. Having fish, eggs, meat is also a necessity because these provide you with all various important minerals and proteins to the body. This will ultimately help you to become fit and lose the extra weight.

Sweets:
If eating sweets is just your thing, think about how much sugar these candy bars and ice creams have, these will surely put on weight fast. Fortunately there are alternatives, like sugar free candy or fruit. If you are craving for something sweet have that instead.

Weight Loss Plans For Teens:

You see the most healthy way to reduce weight is to eat healthy and regularly exercise.

But If you are really serious about losing weight, this next thing is the best, most Easy Weight Loss Plan For Teens to follow.

Dating is an ordinary activity between teens as is clear with thousands of internet dating sites and matchmaking services, which target teen boy and teen girl looking for love, friends and romance. Dating is a practice that leads to mature communication with persons of opposite sex and to finish in finding a life mate or friend. Although teen dating is simply a relationship building process, sexual pleasure often occurs, which at some level of immaturity is not greet. Teen sex is a hot affliction at international level and a main difficulty for parents who usually notice it when it is very late.

Sex at such soft age can be terrible as the teen girl or boy’s body and mind is not fit that much to feel sex, though sexual nature may be in a stage of growth. Another reason is before time pregnancy, which could be demoralizing for girl who has not capabilities to be mother at all. Thus, unwanted pregnancy is a very big problem all over. One more worrying aspect is that teens might not be responsive of secure sex method and the disease associated with that can influence them if careless. It is here where sex information and parent/teacher guidance is required.

Teen can be an aim for sex addict as teen sex is more sought after by such elements and by sexy men and sexy women who search for young body sexually enjoyable and pleasing. The sexual exploitation of teen girl and boy can occur here by sugar daddies, lesbians and gay or swinger couples. Who entice teen mind with inducement of money or erotica, which is very exciting and appealing to the teen people who has just entered puberty. If safe

If the teen has reached sexual development and appeared at an age which is authorize by the condition to indulge in sex. At this age – normally eighteen in most nations, internationally- if he or she needs to have sex it can be legal.

Many teen fall into alcohol and drugs addiction that proceed them into sex trap with adults and sooner or later sexually transmitted disease or AIDS. This is a main setback in developing nations and widely in developed countries like France, UK or US.

Teen sex dating guidance helps teen realize their sexuality in a right way and keeps them out of the troubles way in case they may be sexually exploited. Teen when they attain legal status can have sex and they should if they want but just keep the instruction in mind and enjoy sex with hot teen or old mature senior who treats them with respect and love.

It is easy to discount a teen’s worries and tell them worrying about a boyfriend at age fourteen isn’t important. But, it is to a teen and rejection can be very painful. As adults we are often good at building defenses and a wall, but many teens are vulnerable. Plus, they don’t have many of the outlets that adults have when things are stressful. For instance, as an adult, we can jump in the car and take a ride, drive to the mall to shop, plan a girls night out to forget trouble etc. A teenager often can’t drive and has limited escape options for mental health. There isn’t the luxury of running to a pilates class or getting a massage to try to regain mental peace.

Of course, teens do have ways to diffuse stress such as the internet, cell phone calls, texting and listening to music. Still, if the issues revolve around their friends or dates, many of the same people are interacting and it may just re-inforce the painfulness of the original interaction. If there is additional strain with the family then there just may not be any way it seems to feel good. Adolescent drug rehab can help if the problem gets out of control. If it is occassional use, it’s important to help the person find other ways to feel good which can include exercise that releases endorphins, creative activities like drawing and music or relaxation techniques through tai-chi, meditation and yoga.

If there are family pressures that are the source of the drug problem, brainstorm about an aunt or uncle that the teen can visit for a weekend to just get a new environment. This can help to get a break from each other. It often is hard for teens to open up and one way that is useful for parents is to talk about oneself honestly and an issue that one had and overcame. Don’t be preachy or give a lecture but talk about your own vulnerability, how you felt stuck and the difficult points. This is often why al-anon, aa and other twelve step groups work well because people are able to hear others experiences and understand their process, insights and trials.

It is definitely quite popularly known that there is a problem of teen alcohol abuse in Georgia, and that is a terrible thing in itself, but what most people do not know is that the problem is much direr than it seems to be. Each year, the ages of people who are getting into alcohol abuse in Georgia are getting lower and lower. It is estimated that every eight in ten youngsters in Georgia have had their first taste of alcohol even before they have got out of their high school.

Binging is also getting to a huge problem in the state. Almost every three in five youngsters in the state have participated in at least one binging session once in their entire educational lives. Binging in itself is an alarming situation. When a person binges, by Georgia’s definition, the person is having five or more drinks in a row. That is the reason why binging almost always causes the person to become inebriated and pass out. Various problems can arise out of this habit. In the short term, these binging episodes can cause problems such as accidents due to drunken driving, while in the long term, this habit is going to bring forth a whole generation of alcohol addicted people.

Substance abuse resources in Georgia estimate that if a person begins an alcohol habit before they are eighteen years of age, they have four times as many chances of getting into a hardcore alcohol addiction as if they begin the habit after they have crossed twenty five years of the life. Hence, young people who enter into a binging form of alcohol abuse in Georgia are actually inviting a lifelong addiction upon themselves.

The tendency of teenage alcohol abuse to get converted into alcohol addiction is definitely one of the most serious threats looming over the state of Georgia, given the high rate of youths that are getting into the abuse habit. But even this is not the whole of the problem.

A person who is hooked onto alcohol will become an addict of it soon enough, if the abuse is not checked, but what is most significant here is that the person will begin losing the sense of euphoria that the alcohol created in them during the initial periods of usage. Alcohol can lodge itself in the body so well that the person does not feel the same taste for it after some time. The euphoria that it creates begins to wane. At such a time, the person will most probably begin to consume more of the substance in order to have the same kind of effect. This is where the person converts from being an occasional drinker to being a habitual drinker and then to being a compulsive drinker. The patient now consumes alcohol not because of an urge, but because of a need to experience the same amount of high that was once attained.

This is certainly a very precarious situation. If left unchecked, it can complicate into more serious things, as is clearly seen in the case of alcohol abuse in Georgia. Here, young people who are into alcohol abuse for some length of time will soon get into other forms of addiction. They will most get into addiction options that are open to them, using whichever substance they can get access to. A significant number of them will get into addictions of drugs, if they are available to them. Georgia has seen people with alcohol abuse getting into supplementary forms of addiction, most commonly those of marijuana, cocaine and sometimes even, heroin.

In recent times, a problem that has been linked with teenage alcohol abuse in Georgia is the use of methamphetamine. Methamphetamine is largely considered to be a teen drug too, mostly because it is distributed clandestinely in places where the youth hang out. This drug with a slight aphrodisiacal effect is a big hit with young people. But once people get into a methamphetamine habit, there is no turning back. Methamphetamine is a highly addictive drug and it has extremely harsh withdrawal effects when a treatment is attempted. This makes the alcohol abuse much more complicated and difficult to treat.

Thankfully, there are several centers to treat teen alcohol abuse in Georgia. These centers specifically deal with such a type of addiction and are equipped to biologically and emotionally bring the young people out of their addictions.

In a large way, alcohol abuse depends on the age group of people who are involved in it. For example, if you check out the trends of alcohol abuse in Vermont, you will find that the abuse in teenagers is quite different from the way it is present in the older population. The complications are different, the causes are different and even the cures are different.

Here, the main thing to be remembered is that alcohol abuse is not a physical dependency. This is a habit of the mind. When a person is into an alcohol abuse or any other kind of substance abuse for that matter, it is the mind of the person that dictates the dependency. It is in the mind that the euphoria is created and it is in the mind that any further feelings for using the substance are created. That is why it is quite apt to say that alcohol abuse exists in the mind and not in the body. Now, since the minds of people of different age groups are distinctly different, the ways in which alcohol abuse affects them are also distinctly different.

In Vermont specifically, this distinction can be made out quite clearly in the way the treatment program for alcohol abuse is conducted in different treatment centers. There are treatment centers here that focus on a particular age group. You will find that the treatment pattern that is formulated for a person who is in the age group of 12-18 years will be quite different from the treatment that is designed for people who are above 65 years of age. Not just the counseling part of the treatment, but also the medical approaches followed will be vastly different.

Let us take a brief look into how alcohol abuse treatment in Vermont is complicated by age-related issues in the patients.

Alcohol Abuse in Vermont for the Teenagers

Today, it is not surprising to see children as young as 12 years in some treatment centers of Vermont. The conditions of dependency are becoming more and more dramatic in people of younger age groups because of peer pressure and become emotional issues at home such as family neglect and over-expectation of performance in studies, etc. are driving them to the bottle. There is a chance that these people do not even know what alcohol is but are using it just because they like the feeling they creates. They do not know what repercussions this substance can have on their bodies and minds.

This is where the specially designed counseling treatment works. The one thing it does is to coach the young people into understanding what an alcohol habit is all about and what they can do to come out of it. The repercussions of the addiction are detailed to them, and they are explained how it can affect their personal life, their relationships, their studies and everything about their future life.

Of course, mere counseling is not going to work. Using various behavioral therapies and medicinal approaches, the treatment providers try to keep the problem at a minimum level. Speaking of medicinal approaches, detox may not always be used for teenage alcohol abuse treatment in Vermont because of its intense way of working. Another important aspect here is to include parental counseling because most parents do not know how to deal with an alcoholic junior in their homes.

Alcohol Abuse in Vermont for the Seniors

The biggest problem that can complicate alcohol abuse in Vermont for seniors is the high prevalence of prescription drug abuse. Together, these two substances can cause a dependency that is very difficult to shake out of. There can be other dependencies too, considering that the person will have lost the effect that alcohol can create and may have tried other kinds of addictive substances.

Treating for seniors becomes complicated also because they people might have been with their addiction since a very long period of time and only a very intense detox program may help save their lives. But the detox itself will be very difficult because of the heavy withdrawal they will face.

Other physical and mental issues can complicate the treatment for seniors too. If there are any other chronic problems, then it becomes important to treat both issues simultaneously because one of them can easily influence the other. In such cases, a dual diagnosis treatment approach is adopted in Vermont. Such a treatment method is available in most treatment centers for alcohol abuse in Vermont today.

How to Know if your “little Girl” Has a Drug Problem

It’s official, teen girls now have more problems with drug and alcohol abuse than do teen boys; and they more than likely are using drugs or alcohol for completely different reasons. Additionally, because they don’t often show the same type of behavioral disturbances as do teen boy substance abusers, girls often continue to use for longer at unsafe levels before parents ever know the real extent o the problem.

Firstly, teen girls don’t use drugs and alcohol for the same reason that teen boys do (Why teen girls get addicted ). Teenage boys tend to use drugs and alcohol recreationally, and use for the excitement, fun and experimentation that drugs promise. Girls are far more likely to take drugs or alcohol as a way to combat low self esteem, to gain self confidence in a group, to attract the attention of older teen boys who also use, and to use drugs as a way to combat feelings of depression and anxiety.

Girls suffer more from drug abuse

Unfortunately, teen girls also seem to be uniquely affected by their drug use, and teen girls (already at a higher risk for depression that teen boys) if using and abusing drugs or alcohol are two and a half times more likely to experience clinical depression. They are also far more likely to experience an unwanted pregnancy, contract an STD and also to use drugs for properties such as weight loss.

The problem with pills

Teen girls are especially attracted to prescription pills, attracted by the ease of access, the perception of safety, and the perception of positive side effects (decreased anxiety and weight loss). With some prescription pain killers every bit as addictive as heroin, this is problematic.

Additionally, teen girls tend to abuse for longer on average before receiving intervention and professional help. Teen boys using drugs and alcohol are more likely to get in trouble at school, more likely to get into fights or problems with the law, or more likely to have a DUI; while teen girl users tend to avoid most of these problems. The problem is that without some of these obvious signs of use, parents and teachers remain unaware of the level of use, and are unable to intervene in a timely manner.

Parents need to be on the lookout for drug and alcohol use and abuse in teenage girls, and understand that some of the signs may not obviously point to drug use.

Increasing moodiness and depression is a normal sign of drug use and abuse that very rarely gets identified as such, with parents misattributing changes in behavior to the normal expressions of adolescence. While some moodiness can obviously be expected during the formative adolescent years, excessive signs of depression are not normal; and very likely indicate a greater problem.

If your teen no longer has any interest in family activities or wants to spend all of their time in their room, you should be concerned.

If your teen no longer cares as much about their appearance, you should be concerned.

If your teen suddenly drops all old friends for an assortment of new, and seemingly unsavory friends; you should be concerned.

If grades suddenly slip, you should be concerned.

Any or all of these behavioral signs may or may not indicate a problem with drugs or alcohol, but they are worrying behaviors and they do need to be investigated; and if your child is not experimenting or abusing drugs or alcohol, they may be enduring some form of clinical depression. A professional diagnosis can be very helpful for parents concerned about the health and safety of an at risk teen.

You can never protect your teen from all of the dangers out there, but you can do a lot simply by staying involved and active in their life, by leading with a good example on drugs and alcohol use, and by having clear and understood rules on the use of any form of drugs or alcohol.

Talk to your teen, stay involved, make time for mutually enjoyable activities; you’ll be in a far better position to evaluate what changes in behavior may mean, and how far from normal these changes really are.

The number of teenagers getting into alcohol abuse in West Virginia has only been rising in the past years. It is not uncommon to find teenagers aged 12-14 years getting into centers for alcohol treatment in this state. However, though there are various centers for alcohol abuse in West Virginia, even some centers that are specifically targeted at teenagers, there are several problems that they face in implementing the treatment. Here we take a look at some of the problems that are related with teenage alcohol abuse in West Virginia, especially in regards to the treatment provided by the centers meant for them.

1.	The first problem that most treatment centers face is the strong denial that is found in the teenagers who are abusing alcohol. There is always a tendency in youngsters to downplay their dependency and consider it to be within healthy limits. It is very difficult for them to see the problems that are coming in. Also, they will not easily get ready for accepting the treatment for their condition. This strong denial is what makes treatment difficult, because patients who are denying their treatment will remain quite unresponsive to the methods used in the treatment. The treatment centers might even have to get in touch with the families and other important people who can influence the person to get through the treatment.

2.	The detoxification becomes a problem also. For starters, teenagers cannot use the normal modes of detoxification that adults can use. The reason for that lies in the frailty of their bodies as compared to that of the adults. Their weak bodies will not be able to bear the strong medications that are used for the treatment of alcohol abuse in West Virginia. At the same time, they will not find it simple to go through the withdrawal process too. Teenagers have less tolerance than adults. Hence, they will find it very difficult to bear the symptoms of the withdrawal, which can range from painful cramps and aches to even passing out. The treatment providers face a very grueling time getting young patients through their withdrawal.

3.	Maintenance medication becomes difficult too. There are various kinds of medications for alcohol treatment being used in West Virginia, which are especially used to help patients bear the urges of alcohol. As long as these medications are taken, the patient will not feel the urge for alcohol. However, these medications may not be suitable for the young patients due to their young age. That will make it difficult for them to bear the after treatment period when they will get strong urges for the drink but will not be advised to do it.

4.	Another tricky situation is the counseling. Counseling is a very important part of the aftercare program for alcohol abuse treatment in West Virginia. This is when patients are made to realize that their alcoholism can be completely removed if they make an effort. They are taught various methods to work out their issues and overcome the addiction urges. However, this will be difficult for young patients because they will not realize the dangers of the situation they are in. Most youngsters who have got into the addiction do not even know how precarious a situation they are in. It becomes very difficult to convince them otherwise.

5.	A problem that is very commonly faced in youngsters who are into alcohol abuse in West Virginia is the presence of a secondary addiction. These young people may have an addiction such as a prescription drug abuse or a drug addiction that goes hand in hand with their alcohol habit. They may have taken up this secondary addiction because of getting used to the euphoria caused by alcoholism and wanting to try something different. Such secondary addictions will make alcohol abuse treatment definitely different because of the different symptoms that both addictions will have. Detox will also take a longer time, and it will take a long time to work out their specific issues.

6.	There is always the risk of an alcohol abuse in young people getting to a full blown addiction in a few years time. The younger the person is when getting into an alcohol abuse, the greater will be the chances that he or she will get into a full blown addiction. Alcohol can make the person’s body completely enslaved and hence the condition becomes much more difficult to treat. This is one of the prime concerns of the centers that provide treatment for teenage alcohol abuse in West Virginia.

These associated problems definitely make alcohol abuse in teenagers more complicated than abuse in adults. However, treatment centers in West Virginia are implementing techniques that can help them get out of their conditions.

Teenagers may be the worst hit when they are addicted to alcoholism on a global level. The minimum age of individuals who are being addicted to alcohol is just decreasing year by year. Today, it is neither surprising nor shocking to find individuals who have just entered their teens to be addicted to alcohol. It should be noticed that one deals with a teenager and with a grownup in different manners. In the same vein, there should be different treatment centers for teenagers as well as other adults. Even though there are plenty of deaddiction centers that are specialized and focused towards teenagers, there are several problems faced by these institutions at the initial outset.

Teen alcohol abuse in Georgia is handled in specific ways so as to meet the needs of the young patients. The following are some of the aspects associated with it.

1.	There are several and innumerable reasons that a teenager would be in denial about his or her condition. Firstly, accepting that you have a problem is a symbol of humility and even a matter of embarrassment in some circles. Also, teenagers have a different frame of mind, something like the now classic ‘rebel without a cause’. This may cause them not to understand and accept their problem; therefore create an uncomfortable scenario for people who wish to genuinely help them.

Some teenagers would not even know whether they are addicted to alcohol or are abusing alcohol. Simply because their youth will not allow them to suffer from the initial hangovers or ‘next day weakness’ to the fullest extent. Of course, they will have some discomfort the first time they start abusing alcohol, but all that would just be matter of time for their young body and mindset. In such a scenario, the only thing that people and institutions that wish to help them would have to contact their parents or their guardians.

2.	The constitution of a teenager is quite different than the constitution of an adult. Therefore, teenagers will not be able to handle the strict and rigid detoxification program that an adult will go through. Alcohol abuse calls for some strong medicines and the frail bodies of teenagers will not be able to handle these strong medicines, simply because teenagers have a lesser tolerance than adults. The symptoms of alcohol abuse medicines can range from simple but painful cramps to even passing out completely. Therefore, alcohol addiction treatment is a difficult period for the person administering the treatment as well as the teenager undergoing the program.

3.	Again, the medicines are quite different from teenagers and adults. Maintenance medicines for alcohol addiction and deaddiction are quite strong and not every teenager would be able to handle these medicines. Therefore, it would become quite difficult to administer these drugs, especially because their side effects on children may be almost anything.

4.	The other tricky situation is the counseling. Though counseling is quite an important part of any after care program, this may not have any effect on the teenage mindset. The counseling is when the patient is made to understand the problems they are currently facing due to their addiction and the problems that would be occurring in their later life. However, teenagers are simply not mature enough to understand these problems, or even give a serious thought to their own lives. Therefore, this entire exercise would be a great waste for the teenager.

5.	Alcohol is not the only addiction that teenagers would be having. Teenagers have a conundrum of addictions, and alcohol is just one of them. This may create quite a complex scenario for them and it would be very difficult to get to their psyche and mind over and above the various addictions they have and the problems that they would be facing because of these addictions.

6.	Teenagers are just on the verge of becoming full blown alcohol addicts at any time. Therefore, the people who are counseling or treating them should treat them with care and understand the risks that underlie if they do not succeed in making the teenager completely forget about their bad habits and their alcohol addiction.

7.	Alcohol addiction plays havoc with the mental and physical psyche of a human being. Therefore, it would be quite difficult for anyone to try and solve the addiction without the help of talented and experienced personnel. Also, because of the given age, even some experienced personnel would find it difficult to handle teenagers. Simply put, teenagers are simply not mature enough to understand the grave danger that their lives are in.

These are just some of the aspects of teenager alcohol abuse in Georgia and the methods used to correct them. But of course, medical professionals all over the world are quickly trying to come to a solution for this problem.

The worst nightmare every loving parents fear is losing their children to substance addiction. It is often too late that the problem is discovered. Once you detect your teen is mired in this habit, get professional help and lead him to those online AA meetings. The road to recovery is rough, but your steadfast and loving support will see him through.

Teen Addiction and Online AA Meetings

Working parents struggling with work and home chores are saddled with guilt when they discover that their children took to drugs, alcohol, and illicit sex. Not that they have been remiss with their parental obligations, but they just didn’t suspect that their kids are having adult problems. When things are beyond control, they still have hope with rehabilitation programs and online AA meetings.

It is useless blaming your teen for the mess he or she created. All you can do at this point is to take charge and talk to your teen without losing your cool. Your teen is already suffering and needs your help and understanding, not your ire and recriminations. You’ll have to make clear that you want to help him or her because you care.

This is not easy, but there is no choice. You’ll have to look around for professional and medical help fast before the situation goes from bad to worse. In this line of thought, it’s not the kids alone who need help and counseling. Parents are also under moral obligation to seek help to cope with problems like these. Since they have to be the pillars of strength, they have to have all the resources available to boost their flagging optimism.

The advantage of letting your teen sign up for online AA meetings is more than just giving you and your teen the convenience of joining a support group right in the comfort of your home. Other advantages are:

1. You can monitor his participation and progress.
2. Continuing care.
3. Your teen can share his experience with other sufferers and learn from the experience of others.
4. He or she will learn more tips in controlling the urge to drink or shoot up.
5. The online meetings are anonymous and identities of participants are concealed.

What to Expect When You Sign Up

Many of these online AA meetings provide free registration. If you are worried of the cost, check out your insurance if this expense can be covered. A $399 monthly package will get your teen going for those bi-weekly meets, and he or she will get a 12-month after care support program at no added cost.

You’ll need a software to develop a home page wherein your teen can work on his journal and his AA meeting assignments. A web cam and headset will allow live chat and collaboration. But he or she can choose to remain unseen but heard. The facilitator of the online AA meetings is always visible and ready to accommodate post chat exchanges.

During those online AA meetings, your teen will have to observe rules outlined by the facilitator. Sharing of experiences is facilitated by the moderator. The option whether to participate or not is still given to all participants. Each meeting has an agenda or end goal set and assignments are given at the end of the meeting. All of the activities follow a designed recovery program.

All throughout the ordeal remain steadfast. Your teen’s future is at stake and his card is in your able hands. Take that decisive step now before it is too late.

It’s heartbreaking to watch a teenage child fall into substance abuse and addiction, and once parents make the decision that professional help and residential treatment is needed, a whole new set of challenges emerge, and it can be very hard to know where to get the best help for your son or daughter.

Price is always a consideration, and your degree of insurance coverage and the amount you can afford to contribute does impact on the decision; but it’s always about more than price, and you want to find a drug or alcohol rehab that offers your teen the best quality treatment, that offers quality teen specific treatments, and that offers them the best total chance of sobriety and a life of health and happiness.

Here are 4 criteria that you may use to help in the evaluation process between available rehabs in your area. This can never be a complete list, and there always intangibles, but using the following criteria may help you to narrow down the list, and may make the decision just a little bit easier.

4 ways to evaluate a teen drug or alcohol rehab

1) Is it a teen specific program?

Although many adult facilities maintain that they can offer effective treatments to people of all ages, teens do far better in age specific programming. Teens do not have the same issues or problems as adults in recovery, and face a completely different set of developmental and recovery challenges. Your teen needs to recover in a teen specific facility, no matter what adult rehabs may say about their ability to handle patients of all ages (What Where to get teen drug treatment).

2) What is the level of family involvement?

Even while you child resides in a drug or alcohol rehab away from home you exert enormous influence, and parental involvement has been proven the single greatest influencing factor over the success of a teen in drug or alcohol rehab. Parental involvement cannot mean occasional phone calls, but should involve a committed and active participation in therapies and educational seminars within the rehab.

These whole family programs can help to heal the family, educate the family about the nature of addiction, and teach the family exactly how they can best support the recovering teen addict once back in the home.

Parental involvement is extremely important, and you should not consider a teen drug or alcohol rehab that does not feature a high level of family participation.

3) What type of academic program is offered?

Many teens enter into a rehab significantly behind in school. No teen using and abusing drugs does well in academically, and many teens in treatment need considerable remedial attention and one on one tutoring to catch up.

Rehab should never be a vacation from school, and teens need to fulfill their academic responsibilities while in treatment. The rehab should offer trained and experienced educators, able to manage classroom discipline and behavioral issues effectively.

Because the teacher to student ratio can be quite low, students have an excellent opportunity to benefit from individual instruction and catch up to or even surpass peers in conventional school.

4) How much aftercare is offered?

Rehab should never end with the completion of the residential phase of treatment, and equally important to long term success and sobriety is a lengthy participation in aftercare therapies. Aftercare may be group sessions, may be individual therapy and may be a continuation of 12 steps style meetings; and ideally it is a combination of these different therapies. Aftercare helps teens to consolidate and integrate the lessons of rehab when faced with the realities of temptation and real world challenges; and is extremely important for long term sobriety.

Better rehabs will offer a substantial level of aftercare therapy as inclusive in the price of admission, and you should be wary of any teen drug or alcohol rehab that does not promote aftercare after rehab.

By doing a bit of research and getting as much information as possible about the rehabs under consideration, you are in a much better position to choose a program that truly does offer the best treatments, and the best eventual chance of success.

The following article is meant for parents of a teen who might be obsessed with video and/or computer games. While in some of our other articles we may sound as though we encourage obsession, we share a concern over teens who tend to shun other interests in life in favor for gaming activities to the point where they withdraw from society. We would never encourage this kind of behavior, and that’s why we’ve taken time to describe some of the signs of game obsession and offer some advice on how to deal with it.

Recognizing the signs of teen game obsession isn’t as easy as one thinks. It always starts off as first, an interest, and it then starts to grow into an addition. The problem with identifying the beginning stages of game obsession begins with the teen. By the time our children are 15 and up, they’ve learned some rather impressive debating skills. So when we question their motivations for repetitive game play, they may rebut our concerns with logic and even make it a point to question our own flaws as parents.

Since no parent ever really wants to admit a flaw, we can sometimes cave in and convince ourselves that maybe 4 hours in front of a video game isn’t that bad. After all, we spend that much time at the computer, on the phone, or transmitting data back and forth between our Palms, Blackberries, and Cingular cell phones.

Be careful not to fall prey to the logical teen. Video games can be addictive and if the time spent playing them is not carefully monitored, they’ll consume everything that a teen used to care about.

The moment you notice your teen’s grades falling, homework missing, or social life starting to drop off, nip that game time in the bud. If you wait too late to restrict game time, you may experience pre-adult temper tantrums that you aren’t prepared to handle correctly (cursing, breaking things, stealing, running away from home, etc.). At this point, the child is obsessed and will do anything to get his or her hands on a game controller.

Another sign of obsession is a behavioral change. A child obsessed with gaming will lose patience with things and with others, be quick to anger, and react to situations without fully thinking of the consequences. If you’ve paid any attention to video and/or computer games, you’ll notice that they require this kind of behavior to win or to advance to a higher level.

It’s unfortunate, but a teen obsessed with this kind of violent gaming is literally being trained to react in the manner described above. That’s why it’s pertinent that as an adult, you restrict access to this kind of entertainment and replace it with activities that slow thinking (such as art, music, theater, etc.) and expose your child to other non-violent pleasures (swimming, dance, skating, etc.).

There are a lot of debates circulating around about the impact that video games have on today’s youth and some of it might warrant paying closer attention to.

Teens experiment with prescription drugs for many different reasons. Some teens think the drugs will help them to have more fun or to be happier, or lose weight. Because family members could have the prescription, these drugs can be easier to get than street drugs. Prescription drugs are very commonly sold on the street like other illegal drugs as well. Some teens even think a prescription drug, regardless of whom it was prescribed to be safer than an ordinary street drug.

Cynthia may take her brother’s ADHD medicine to curb her appetite because she had been told how bad diet pills could be. Cynthia thought the ADHD drug would be safer. After all, it was prescribed by a doctor for her brother – - but not for her – - and not for the condition in which she is taking the ADHD drug.

Prescription drugs are only safe for the people who actually have prescriptions for them. A doctor has examined the person and told them exactly how to take the drug, and most likely, the person has also been told those things to avoid while taking the drug such as alcohol or other medications. Cynthia would most likely not have the same type of information and may combine this drug with another substance that could cause her significant health problems and/or even death.

Cynthia did not know that taking her brother’s ADHD medicine was also illegal. Taking drugs without a prescription – or sharing a prescription drug with friends – is breaking the law.

There are three classes of most commonly used prescription drugs which include:

?Opioids
?Central Nervous System (CNS) Depressants
?Stimulants

Opioids include:

?Oxycodone (OxyContin), hydrocodone (Vicodin) and meperidine (Demerol)

Opiodis are prescribed to treat pain or relieve coughs or diarrhea.

Central Nervous System (CNS) Depressants include:

?Valium and Xanax

Medical uses of CNS drugs are to treat anxiety, tension, panic attacks and sleep disorders.
Stimulants include:

?Ritalin and Strattera

Stimulants are used to treat narcolepsy, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, depression, obesity and asthma.
Drug abusers usually have trouble at school, at home, in relationships with friends or significant others and the law. A person abusing drugs is more likely to commit a crime or have an accident regardless of whether the drugs are prescribed medications or street drugs.

As with all types of drug abuse, using prescription drugs for the wrong reasons has serious health risks. A single dose of an opioid can lower breathing rate and even kill if taken by the wrong person in the wrong circumstances. These health risks are increased when taken with other substances such as alcohol, antihistamines, and CNS depressants. The most common result of prescription drug abuse is addiction.

Signs of prescription drug addiction:

?The need to have a particular drug or substance
?Changes in mood, weight, or interests

There are two kinds of treatment for persons addicted to prescription drugs, they are:

?Behavioral
?Pharmacological

Behavioral treatments teach people how to function without the drugs, how to handle cravings, how to avoid drugs and situations that could lead to drug use and preventing and handling relapses.

Pharmacological treatments involve giving a patient a special type of medication to help him or her overcome withdrawal symptoms and drug cravings.

If you are worried about becoming addicted to a drug prescribed for you, this most likely will not happen. Doctors know how much medication to prescribe so that you do not receive too much. The prescribed drug for you will be the correct amount and the drug will relieve your symptoms without making you addicted.

If a doctor prescribes a pain medication, stimulant or CNS depressant, follow the directions exactly. Keep all your doctor’s appointments. Your doctor will monitor how well the medication works for you and will make necessary adjustments. Some medicines will need to be stopped or changed after a while so the person does not become addicted. Follow all the instructions given regarding drugs and activities you should avoid while taking your prescription medication. Never increase or decrease the dose of your medication without checking with your doctor first regardless of how you feel.

Self-Harm (primarily cutting or wrist slashing)
S-e-x
Bullying or abusing others
Video Games
How do I know this? Because I asked.

I’ve spoken to thousands of students across the U.S. and Canada about addictions. Each participant was asked: “What habits(s) do you most want to stop or reduce in your life right now?” The answers were startling.

A group of 265 students (Grades 7-12) anonymously listed 92 different destructive habits with which they were struggling – a total of 1031 times! This means that each child had an average of four habits from which they wanted FREEDOM.

The 12 most common addictive habits are listed above. The other 80 are equally as shocking. (for a full list visit www.thepowerofchoice.ca)

Who Are These Kids and Where Do They Come From?

For only 265 kids to self-identify 1031 bad habits and addictions seems incredible. But it’s true. Yet there was nothing unusual about the type of schools these kids came from and the communities they lived in ranged from low-to-high income.

Often, these weren’t your typical “at-risk” students, referred by school officials, guidance counselors or parents. And for school staff, it was an eye opener. Many had been unaware of how many students were suffering in silence, and were stunned to hear of the multitude of addictive behaviors.

How do we reach these Kids?

As a school speaker, I am fully aware that trying to scare students out of experimenting with dangerous or illegal activities is not the most effective approach.

That’s why I use my personal story of addiction in a different way — as a way of connecting my own challenges, pain and choices with theirs, so as to inspire those in pain to attend my healthy habits workshop and 28-day program.

What I’ve discovered is that kids relate to this. Yes, many are alienated or angry. Those with serious behaviours and addictions are afraid, and they’re desperate for a way out. But when someone is honest and direct with them, and has practical answers to the problems they’re facing, they are ready to listen.

How Much “Choice” Do We Really Have?

What I’ve recognized and teach kids in my workshops is that being a victim is a choice. Yes, we may have been “victimized” and experienced bad things in our lives. But how we look at those events now is up to us.

As a teenager, my choices led me to become and stay addicted. By transforming what was behind my addictions and becoming responsible for the decisions I had made, I am now able to live free of addictions, rather than as a victim of my past.

Applying this in our Schools

What I want students to know is that they have this same choice. My workshops help kids shift their attention and energy away from the seemingly hopeless nature of their “bad habits,” and redirect it towards developing healthy habits.

We focus on their power to choose, to support others, and be supported by a community and buddy system, while reducing their bad habits until they get to abstinence (if that is what they choose).

This message encourages and enables young people to make far more change than any threats or negative statistics could ever do. And the results are proving very positive.

Final Words

I believe it’s up to us, as adults, to teach kids to take responsibility for the choices that affect their lives, and to offer them practical steps that will give them positive results. And the best way to teach that is to do it for ourselves.

As Gandhi said, “be the change you want to see in the world.”

Teenage drug addiction has become more prevalent in today’s culture than thirty years ago. Then alcohol and marijuana were the primary substances used by adolescents. In 2009 however, the prevalence of teen drug addiction has become alarming.

The number of adolescents undergoing drug addiction counselling has increased rapidly. Many centres have begun to accept patients younger than eighteen seeking help with addiction because the demand has become so great. However, adolescent drug abuse is a delicate subject as the psychology of teenagers is extremely complex and external factors are often influential in drug use in this age group.

Adolescence is not easy
Adolescence begins at approximately age 10 for girls and 12 for boys with the further development of their reproductive organs and sexual maturity. Hormones develop and behavioural changes begin to occur as well as physical changes. Individuals experiencing puberty and adolescence are going through one of the most difficult times of their lives. The physical and emotional changes play a large role in the confusion and the need for acceptance which adolescents feel at this time.

Peer pressure is a big motivator behind the increased use of drugs and alcohol. Adolescents are experiencing a stage where they struggle to find their identity whilst emerging from the safety blanket of their parents. They are beginning their preparations for adult life and self-esteem can suffer in the confusion which adolescence brings.

Drugs and self-destructive behaviour
To a teenager, it seems that only their friends understand them. The need to be accepted can involve participating in the same behaviour as their circle of friends, which can be experimenting with drugs and alcohol. Alcohol and marijuana are commonly used by teenagers, as are ‘party’ drugs such as MDMA (ecstasy), Acid (LSD) and magic mushrooms. Harder drugs such as cocaine, heroin, crack-cocaine and crystal methamphetamine are sometimes used by adolescents but less frequently. Solvents such as glue, paint thinners and aerosol gases are also a popular choice of drug for teens.

Professionals are generally hesitant to label a teenager as an addict for two reasons: Firstly, addiction is a disease – if a person is using drugs regularly, this does not mean that they are a drug addict. Secondly, teenagers are developing psychologically and it can be dangerous to diagnose someone as an addict before they are at least 20 years old.

Disease of Addiction
The disease of addiction is incurable, grows progressively worse and is fatal unless arrested. It can be stopped by the application of drug addiction counselling and a programme of recovery. The disease concept states that an addict is sick and that their drug use and other compulsive behaviours are symptoms of this ’sickness’. Either someone has the disease or not.

Those addicts that do start drinking and using can experience a ‘honeymoon period’. This is a phase when an alcoholic/addict is at the beginning of their drinking/using career: an enjoyable time when the disease has not progressed yet. Addicts generally begin this phase of addiction in their teens.

It must be emphasised that many teens who do not have the disease of addiction will try drugs and may use them regularly until they decide they do not need them and want to stop. An addict will not be able to stop – this is the difference between addicts and non-addicts. Addiction sees those with the disease continuing to drink or take drugs for the rest of their lives until they receive help. It is also the reason why many professionals will not label a teen as an addict as they may just be going through the adjustment to adulthood.

Getting help
A teenager may not qualify for diagnosis as an addict yet drug use and compulsive disorders such as eating disorders, self-harm, promiscuity and other risky behaviours are a clear message that there is a problem. Whether it is addiction or not, help is available.

Signs to watch for if you suspect your child is taking drugs are:

Declining school marks and truancy Weight loss or gain Large or pin-prick sized pupils Secretive behaviour Abandonment of old friends for a ‘new’ group Lack of finances, never having money, borrowing money Money going missing in the house Disappearance of their expensive personal possessions Isolating, spending a lot of time in their room or out of the house Violent outbursts and rage Lack of interest in things which used to please them Smell of solvents or thinners on their clothes or in their mouths Glass pipes, burnt/broken light bulbs, rolling papers, tinfoil, hypodermic needles, melted lighters, plastic ‘bankies’ in their possession

Help is available for teens using drugs. It can be very beneficial for them to undergo drug addiction counselling at a drug and alcohol treatment centre if the problem is serious. A centre which encourages clients to follow a 12 Step programme of recovery (such as Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous), and provides one to one counselling and therapy groups and a healthy lifestyle will have the best results.

It is never a good idea to force a teenager into recovery from drug addiction or other compulsive behaviours, neither is it a good idea to put them into a rehabilitation programme simply if you discover your child has taken drugs – this may do more harm than good. If your child has begun to develop a serious addiction problem and cannot cease their use of drugs and other compulsive behaviours, then treatment is a good idea.

While there are many issues with teenagers that strike fear in the heart of a parent, teen drug use is the prime one. But you can’t let your fear force you to ignore drug concerns in your child’s life. Each and every teenager knows someone in school who experiments or uses drugs. Every teen has seen it on television or in the newspapers. To bring up a drug-free teenager you’ll need to put your fear aside and empower your teenager with all the positive aspects of life to meet this issue head on.

Few things parents should know about preventing teen drug use:

·	Be there for your teen when he needs to get out of a bad situation.

·	Get to know your teen’s friends and their parents on a first name basis.

·	Keep connected in the after school hours.

·	Be a role model.

·	Unite your family against drugs using strong family beliefs.

Signs of Teens drugs use:

·	loss of interest in family activities and disrespecting family rules

·	defiant of authority

·	poor work performance

·	negative, argumentative, paranoid or confused, destructive, anxious

·	overly tired or hyperactive

·	drastic weight loss or gain

·	reduced memory and attention span

Though some of these warning signs of drug abuse may be present in your teen, but it does not mean that they are definitely using drugs. There could be causes for some of these behaviors. Even the life stage of adolescence is a valid reason for many of them to exist. On the other side of that, do not ignore the warning signs of teenage drug abuse.

One of the things that kids value most is the trust and respect of their parents. However, when kids think they won’t get caught, they don’t feel their bond of trust is ever in jeopardy and they do what they want. It’s easy for good kids to make bad choices.

Parenting decisions are only as sound as the facts on which they are based. Unfortunately, parents often make decisions based on fantasy rather than facts.

Let’s explore the topic of teen substance abuse as an example. Too many parents get lulled into a false sense of security because their kids play sports, make good grades, and have “nice” friends. That’s a fantasy.

Speaking factually, about half of all high school seniors have tried illegal drugs. (The numbers go much higher if you include the students who have used tobacco and alcohol.)

From the time children are very young, they’re taught to “just say no” to drugs. I’m convinced that the peer pressure usually gets worse when they do because teens don’t know what to say next.

An emerging trend offers parents direction and hope. Drug testing kits now exist that can be administered at home and provide instant results for a fraction of the cost of a lab, without sacrificing accuracy or privacy. Parents who follow through with such an approach give their teens a socially acceptable excuse. The words “My parents test me” stop pushy peers in their tracks. Additionally, teens’ poor behavior and choices can be made to change when teens know it’s a certainty rather than a remote possibility that their drug use will be discovered.

Parents often ask me when they should talk to their kids, what they should say, and what they can do to follow through. Ben Franklin said, “Wise is the man who fixes his roof before it rains.” I couldn’t agree more. I suggest that parents would be well served to sit down with their children and start talking about the dangers of drugs as early as when their children are in middle school.

While a conversation about the dangers of drug use is an important first step, it’s simply not enough to protect your child without a plan to follow through. To prevent teen drug use in his community in Idaho, Dr. Michael Reznicek, a medical doctor with emergency room experience, actually developed a software program that facilitates the initial parent–child conversation.

Dr. Reznicek believes trust should be earned rather than bestowed. His approach eliminates potential misunderstandings by creating a contract that spells out specific rewards and consequences tied to home drug test results. Additionally, the software he developed becomes the preferred target of potential animosity over requests for hair, urine, or saliva samples for drug testing purposes because it also selects random testing dates.

You’re not alone if you think YOUR teen would “just say no” to drugs. A recent study by the Partnership for a Drug-Free America found that only 18 percent of parents were willing to consider the possibility that THEIR child had tried illegal drugs (not including tobacco or alcohol). It’s no wonder so many teens think their parents won’t find out. They’re right—until it’s too late.

The news stories and police statistics confirm it: young teens today are more violent, disobedient, oversexed, and out of control than ever! They’re having unprotected sex, doing drugs, and trying to get pregnant at younger ages than before. Today’s teenagers on Maury are engaging in this type of risky behaviour.

Drug testing is a way of assessing type and amount of legal or illegal drugs taken by a person. It is a self or laboratory process which looks for evidence of drug consumption by analyzing blood, hair, sweat, saliva or urinal samples.

Tips for Parents :

Drugs among teenagers have been on the rise for some time now and have been a matter of concern to parents, family, local authorities and friends. The problem is much worse in the western countries, especially the US where teenage drug and alcohol abuse statistics show that the more and more children are falling victims to it. According to an annual survey of U.S. youth, three-fourths of 12th graders, more than two-thirds of 10th graders, and about two in every five 8th graders have consumed alcohol. How can one be sure if a teenager is on drugs? That one may be victims’ parent, a concerned school official or someone associated with a drug rehab center. Most of the children and young people are uncertain about the law concerning to drugs and the possible consequences for them in their future. If a child is caught in possession of a controlled drug they are bound to be committed a criminal offence and that will be documented by the police and also not permitted from taking up certain jobs or professions, and visiting other countries.

Tips for Employers :

Employers need consent from staff for drug testing in the workplace. Any employer will be keen to keep drug misuse away from the workplace. As well as causing ill health, drug misuse increases the chances of accidents at work and interferes with how much work is done. Because of the safety risks from drug misuse, workplace is recommended to have a policy on this matter. The policy could be drawn up between employee and employer or employee health and safety representatives. Employer has legal responsibilities to look after employee’s health and safety as far as reasonably possible and must assess any possible risks. However, there are some limits on what an employer can do to check on an employee’s activities.

Teen drug and alcohol drug abuse could possibly happen in any home or school. If you think that the police will only arrest someone who’s caught dealing drugs that is not true. Even using drugs for personal use may land a person in trouble and could lead to a large fine or time in prison.

Teenage drug addiction is a severe problem that could not be controlled successfully. A common definition of addiction is, “The uncontrollable and compulsive use of mind-altering drugs/substances, even though having the knowledge of the fact that such use may cause problems with one’s life”. Addiction can be physical and/or psychological dependence on a chemical substance.

The Reasons for Teenage Drug Abuse

Adolescence is an age of trying new things. Most of the teens are innocent of the consequences of the drug abuse when they start consuming for the first time. Some of the reasons for teen drug abuse are-

•	Teens mostly want to do an adventure by experimenting with the drugs. It is difficult to identify which teen experiments and stop and which one addicts.

•	Many kids start using drugs when they see their family members or friends consume. In general, the family members seen by the teenagers highly influence them to use drugs.

•	They come to know the effects of the drug abuse like- it feels good, to reduce stress, to feel grown up (mentally & physically).

•	Often peer pressure plays a major role. The situation gets out of hands when teens start rely on drugs and think that they need it to escape from problems at school, home life or with friends.

•	Favorite movie stars use drugs in movies and the popular bands sing songs about it. This has a major impact on teens, as they always want to follow their idols.

The most common reason of drug abuse either experimentally or habitually, is to experience an immediate euphoric effect. Other common reasons for teenage drug abuse include – to become popular with friends, think people would like them more, because someone else wanted them to use, to make them feel more like an adult and they could make extra money selling them. Teenagers who are alcoholic are more prone to use drugs rather than non-alcoholic.

The Warning Signs of Teenage Drug Abuse:

The warning signs of teen drug abuse are generally classified into five different categories. They are –

•	Physical: Overly tired or hyperactive, repeated health complaints, red and glazed eyes, strange smell on breathe or body and a lasting cough.

•	Emotional: Personality change, sudden mood changes, irritability, irresponsible behavior, low self-esteem, poor judgment, depression, impassiveness, over-reacts to criticism- acts rebellious.

•	Family: Verbally or physically abusive, breaks family rules, withdraws from the family activities, spends much time in their rooms, constant excuses for irrational behavior.

•	School: Decreased interest in school activities, negative attitude, drop in grades, absenteeism, reduced memory and attention span and discipline problems.

•	Social: New friends who are not interested in usual home and school activities, less interest in sports or other extracurricular activities, problems with the law, and change to uncommon styles in dress and music.

The above stated reasons and warning signs can help parents and teachers to identify the drug abusing teens at the initial stage and help them to check further addiction.
