If your county has mental health program you can call them and ask questions what they do to prevent drug abuse. There are also programs to prevent alcohol and drug abuse. You can probably find that information on your states DHS website.

When it comes to actual caregivers unless you know somebody I don’t think anybody would give you the name. But you can ask if they those programs could help you to find somebody who would be willing to help you with your school project.

Some 6 percent of students in non-border counties had ever used powder or crack/cocaine, and 2 percent had used it in the past month. In comparison, students in schools on the Texas border reported higher levels of cocaine use-10 percent lifetime and 4 percent past month.

Alcohol is the primary drug of abuse in Texas. In 2008, 63 percent of Texas secondary school students (grades 7-12) had ever used alcohol, and 30 percent had drunk alcohol in the last month. Lifetime use decreased by 5 percent and past-month use decreased by 3 percent between 2006 and 2008. The problems really never change over the years with only reflections in %’s either going up or down. But we continue to see the damaging effects these drugs bring to the teenagers who abuse drugs.

Teenage Drug Abuse Statistics In Texas

Keith’s problem was that he was unusually shy and would always make his performances at sports and academics speak for him.  He however became friends with Nancy and both of them would go out on dates. But soon Keith came to know that this girl had a big group of guys and girls who would meet on the weekends and go clubbing or at parties.

Keith who actually came from a conservative background decided to join his girl for fun and parties.  On the day he went with Nancy for the party, she introduced him to a group of her friends, most of whom were guys. He found to his surprise that Nancy was a footloose girl who enjoyed her drinks and even smoked some cigarettes. Keith who was initially averse to these things decided to follow suit and indulge himself.  Soon he started loving himself and being with this group made him feel good about life.

Keith would now stop going to his baseball session and instead would cook up excuses to join his girlfriend and her group of friends for a round of drinks, partying and even drugs. Of course, they would do it in the sly, at a friend’s house or at clubs.  Soon the effect of drinks began to show on Keith and his grades also feel.  Soon it dawned to him that Nancy was not interested in him but in a guy who was far more macho and stylish than him.

It was clear that Nancy had decided to dump him and his fears came true when she said that they should part their ways but they could still be friends. Keith obviously did not like this and   since he saw his girls openly kissing and cozying up to the other guy, decided to drink more and more so that he felt better.  Keith’s parents noted that his health was declining and so were his grades but they couldn’t decipher that their child was drinking as he was always careful to pop a mouth-freshener before reaching home.

However, as he became addicted he forgot to cover-up his misdemeanors and soon it became evident to Keith’s mother that he was drinking. She confronted him to stay off alcohol and he agreed that he would. But the next weekend, he decided to do drink again. He joined the group and began drinking again and saw Nancy kissing her new boyfriend in his presence. This enraged him no-end and both of them engaged in a physical fight and both boys ended up with bruises all over

 The neighboring police station was alerted as both the boys had severely injured each other. The cops registered a case against them, the parents of the boys were called and the boys were insulted and reprimanded for drinking at such a young age. The alcohol content in the blood of the boys was very high and the doctor who looked into Keith’s case said that he was an alcoholic and should be put in a teen treatment center. The parents decided that it would be better to do so because Keith showed no remorse for his actions.

 At the teen treatment center, due care, counseling, therapy and medication was given. With time, Keith came to know what he was losing on and how he had let his parents down by being downright irresponsible. He regretted his actions and now he is fully treated, concentrating on his studies and baseball with full passion and vigor.

 Here are some of the reasons for teen depression:

Over-expectations by parents to study and get good grades.
 Troubled relationship at home; fights at home between parents and the issue of one or both the parents having a drinking problem.
Peer pressure and the inability to fit into a particular peer group and being branded as a ‘loser’

 Parents need to take a careful but tolerant view of teen problems.  It is the duty of the concerned people to make sure that the teen is taken to a teen rehab center especially if it looks like that the teen seems to be perennially in some form of worry or anxiety. How to Help Teenage Depression With a Teen Treatment Center

Frequent, repeated use of any substance changes brain chemistry over time and can lead to substance dependence. Dependence means it takes larger amounts over time to get the same effect from that substance (example: alcohol). 7.  My teen should never use medication to treat his addiction or he is just trying to fix his problems with another pill.

As a psychiatrist that specializes in drug addiction and alcoholism, I see parents struggling with these myths. Here are some examples of parents from my practice holding on to these myths:

HR told her parents she had an alcohol problem and wanted to go to rehab. Her father responded, “You don’t need a vacation”. Her father just wanted her to quit drinking. Several months later, after HR had a seizure, he realized her alcohol problem was very serious and she needed professional help to overcome her addiction.

TJ smoked pot every day while living at home. When I confronted his parents about why they tolerated this, the dad said, “I smoked pot at his age, too.” He changed his attitude after his son’s second DUI and got him some help. When I treated his underlying anxiety with a non-addicting mediation, he quit smoking pot.

AJ dropped out of college for alcohol and drug use and went to rehab. She called her mom from rehab and said she hated the program and was coming home. Her mom sent her a plane ticket and AJ relapsed with a friend on the way back from the airport. When I confronted her mom about enabling AJ, she said, “She was just having trouble adjusting to college. Her father and I have had some trouble which has her stressed.”

Parents; throw these 7 myths out the window! You will then be in a position to help your child. Your family must be able to face teen substance abuse head on. Addiction is not any one’s fault.

Addiction is a medical disease that progresses over time. It can be life threatening and should not be ignored.

Addiction is not a matter of will power. The brain produces cravings for the substances that have been abused because those substances have altered brain chemistry. Significant cravings can overpower rational thinking and lead to relapse.

Medications that combat cravings or treat underlying depression or anxiety may be key in helping your teen quit drugs and alcohol. Be open to having your teen evaluated by a psychiatrist.

Communicate with your teen in a calm manner. Listen to their point of view. Face the addiction problem as a family. As you know, every family member is affected. Go to Al-anon or Families Anonymous for support. These meetings are a place to learn how to set boundaries with your teen. Therapy can help too. Then family healing can begin.

Here was someone who had recognised the knowledge in the talk as truth and wanted to change his ways. Here was a young guy who had made a decision. He agreed he wanted to get back into his football again and that this was the crowd he should hang out with. He also agreed that he needed to look after himself better, eat better, work out more. He also said that he still had the goal to make it as a professional footballer. I could see that this young guy had got some focus back in his life and that he really meant what he was saying. We parted company with me giving him the simple advice that if problems should come up, whether feelings of frustration or failure or whether antagonistic comments from his “old”mates, he should just choose a trusted person to share this with.

Parents can avoid teen drug abuse by being the stable datum in the confusion.

Figures vary depending on where you look, but it is estimated that up to 80 per cent of early sexual experiences occur under the influence of alcohol and the vast majority of these are subsequently regretted.

So what can you do to protect your children? The first thing is to understand if your child is drinking at all and to do this you need to be aware of where your child is at all times. If they are out with friends, always make sure that you see them on their return, and engage them in conversation. Talking to your children about alcohol is really important, and – like talking about sex – is best introduced from an early age as a part of an ongoing conversation about what is right and what is wrong in life. Expressing disapproval or concern over drunken behaviour is a good way to start to get the message across to young children that alcohol can lead people to do things that make them look silly.

Learning experience

As children grow older, the key to effective discussion is an open relationship where you allow your child or teenager to talk comfortably to you – easier said than done, admittedly, but the secret to this is to listen, listen, listen, and help your child reach conclusions by talking through their thoughts. They are going to make mistakes – statistics show that they are likely to try alcohol and over-indulge before the age of 18 on at least one occasion, and if this can be turned into a learning experience, then this is all to the good.

The modern-age jet age pushes the teen down with a lot of new sets of tensions and anxieties. This is purely because today there is no guidance available to them and what is present is also in the form of media overkill.

Teenage Binge Drinking Problems

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, over 17,000 people were killed in alcohol-related traffic accidents in the United States last year, a rate of one person every 30 minutes. Even more alarmingly, almost 1/3 of the 15- to 20-year-old drivers killed in motor vehicle crashes in the U.S. had been drinking.

Statistics show that approximately 70% of all teenagers drink alcohol, including 1 out of 10 children between the ages of 12 and 13.

Safeguards against Underage Drunk Driving:

Parents and older siblings must be aware that they are role models to younger family members, and should be cognizant of what kind of examples they set in regard to both their driving and drinking habits.

Restricting access to liquor and automobiles at home may be an effective preventative measure in the short term, but it is even more advisable to confront your son(s) and/or daughter(s) about the serious risks involved with underage drinking.

Whether driving or riding as a passenger in a vehicle, always wear a seatbelt!

If you see vehicles that are speeding excessively or swerving, try to get a license plate number and call your Sheriff’s Office, the local or state police.

If a person has too much to drink and insists on getting behind the wheel, do not get into the vehicle.

If you are going to an event where alcohol will be served, take public transportation like buses or taxis, if possible.

Regardless of your age, if you believe you may have a drinking problem, consult a school counselor, health professional, or an alcohol support group (for example, Alcoholics Anonymous).

In reaction to teenage drunk driving statistics, states have enacted harsher penalties to punish teens that drink and drive. Most states have adopted zero tolerance laws which make it a crime for a teenager to operate a motor vehicle under the influence of any amount of alcohol. In addition to harsh penalties for teenage drunk driving, it is also a crime in most states for a minor to drink, possess, transport, buy or even try to buy alcohol. Parents can be penalized for furnishing alcohol to minors, especially in cases where teenage drunk driving was involved.

Teenage drunk drivers also face some serious legal consequences that will harm them into their adult lives. They face revocation of their driving privileges, stiff fines, probation, alcohol education and treatment, and community service not to mention potential jail/prison time for a severe offense.

What Every Parent Should Know About Alcohol and the Teenage Brain

Understanding Teenage Substance Abuse and how to Find Help at a Teen Treatment Center

 The treatment process is such that the person is taken to the hospital quickly so that his or her condition can be monitored closely. Fluids and oxygen are given and a lot of proactive measures are taken to make sure that the person does not choke or suffer from breathing problems or chest pain.  There are some very effective medications that are used in treating alcoholism and alcohol poisoning which have proved to be fruitful

 Zofran(ondansetron) is one medicine that has been used  with beneficial results to treat alcoholism in people under 25 years of age who suffer from alcohol addiction.   There is another drug which is equally helpful, called Naltrexone. Doctors administer it to manage alcoholism in youngsters. What Naltrexone does is that it decreases the cravings of alcohol by putting a stop to the body’s ‘high’ response to alcohol.  You can take Naltrexone only under the close guidance of the doctor who prescribes you to take it by mouth or even gives monthly injections.

 Disulfiram  (Antabuse) is prescribed for some alcoholics; it works by reducing  the craving for the substance by producing a negative reaction to alcohol. Acamprosate(Campral) also works by reducing alcohol  cravings for those who have stopped drinking, this can be useful for those who may go into a relapse. 

 Doctors may be shy of using medical treatments for teenagers because for the adolescents, drinking is more to get that mental high. So with relapse prevention programs and counseling, doctors try to provide individual help to teenagers by charting short-term goals in a bid to make the individual stop drinking alcohol.   Some of the treatment programs that are specifically aimed at teenagers according to teen treatment centers include drug testing, 12 step programs like Alcoholics Anonymous and motivational enhancement therapy.

There is also another form of treatment called ‘stimulus control’ that is used to teach the teen to stay away from conditions that are related to alcohol abuse and substitute them with activities that are productive, healthy and creative.  Then there are two other forms of controls-urge control and social control that is used in relation with changing behavioral pattern and seeking the help of family members and others to benefit from treatment.

Jason and other teenagers are at risk for substance abuse include those with a family history of substance abuse, who have low self-esteem, who feel hopelessly alienated, as if they don’t fit in, or who are depressed. That is why it is important to due your home work so you know what to look for. What are the Symptoms of Substance Abuse? First of all, if a person is a substance abuser, he is probably going to be guarding his privacy more than usual. Different substances lend themselves to different groups of symptoms.  Physical signs of substance abuse are: slurred speech, memory impairment, in coordination, and impairment of attention. There are a number of practical and empirical methods to determine substance use, among them being urine or blood testing. A dual diagnosis is given to any person who has both a substance abuse problem and an emotional or psychiatric disorder.  Keep in mind, however, that the above characteristics of a possible substance abuser could also be characteristics of a person with depression and substance abuse.
When dealing with my teen I found it helpful to talk about how the substance abuse is affecting everyone. That way they can see how it is not just their problem they have to deal with themselves.  It is important for them to know that they have support.  They may act like they don’t care but deep down behind that angry teenage exterior they really just want to know that someone cares.
Stressful events can profoundly influence the abuse of alcohol or other drugs. A number of clinical and epidemiological studies show a strong association between psychosocial stressors early in life e g , parental loss, child abuse and an increased risk for depression, anxiety, impulsive behavior, and substance abuse in adulthood.  According to Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration SAMHSA , almost 50% of the average teen day often includes drinking, smoking, or using illicit drugs. The overindulgence in and dependence on an addictive substance, especially alcohol or a narcotic drug can ruin a person’s life.  Especially if that person is young, like a teenager.  The patterns that they develop at that age carry well into adulthood.
Researchers have long recognized the strong correlation between stress and substance abuse, particularly in prompting relapse. Although exposure to stress is a common occurrence for many teenagers it is also one of the most powerful triggers for relapse to substance abuse in addicted individuals.  This is why treating a substance abuse problem is not just a one time thing.  If your child has unfortunately developed an addiction it must be delt with to the fullest.  Just confiscating their beer and telling them not to do it again isn’t going to be enough.  You have to be their back-up in the war on stress and peer pressure.  YOU have to make them understand what you already know.  However, this must be done in a democratic and fair manner.  You must make them understand that it is not their fault, but it is a reality that must be delt with and they are going to have to act like a mature adult in order to solve this problem.
We all must focus on restoring teenagers emotional well-being, develop healthy ways to manage stress, and avoid them turning to drugs or other substances to escape stressful realities of the day.  If the problem is too big to deal with then t may be time to seek professional help.  I do however recommend being VERY well informed before this.  The more that you know and can help the professionals with the faster your teens road to recovery.  Jason is doing well now, his grades are up and we have our daily “meetings,” so I know exactly what I can help him with.

Teenage Substance Abuse

If you know any teen who is a drug addict and family wants to overcome this habit, then guide them to a drug rehabilitation center or a good counselor. Teenage Drug Addiction

Almost 40% of teenagers got their last alcoholic drink from their parents 10% of 12 year-olds had consumed alcohol in the week before the survey – This had increased to 49% by the time they were 17 30% of 15 years olds & 44% of 17 year olds were binge drinking (7+ drinks for males, 5+ drinks for females) in the past week 25% of parents thought it acceptable to provide 15- 16 yr olds alcohol at a supervised party.

These are rather alarming statistics now that we have the research. Alcohol appears to damage more severely the frontal areas of the adolescent brain, crucial for controlling impulses and thinking through consequences of intended actions.

Teenagers appear to be more sensitive to the learning and memory problems that can be caused by alcohol. They are more likely than adults to suffer from lack of judgment and memory loss.

Alcohol has a powerful impact on the ability to form new memories, particularly for facts and events. Short-term or moderate drinking can impair learning and memory far more in youth than in adults. Adolescents need only drink half as much as adults to suffer the same negative effects.

Because of the ease most teenagers have in obtaining alcohol, it can be regarded as the most dangerous drug of all. Parents with the attitude of ‘Well I’d rather have them drink here where I can supervise them.’ is a joke.

I was a teen once upon a time, and every party I ever went too that had alcohol, and they all did – where the alcohol was provided by the parents, never had the parents supervision anyone.

They stayed upstairs, comfortable that they were being responsible because the kids where in the house and not out driving around.

Wake up parents – you can’t do this and expect to change the behavior of your teens.
