Drugs and Alcohol often change your child's behavior- often they don't seem like themselves and often progress to drastic mood swings, anger outbursts etc. Friends can also be a good indicator has he/she stopped hanging out with friends they grew up with and changed to other friends who may not be a good influence?

If he/she is withdrawn and stays in the room all the time that is a good indicator of low self-esteem or depression- especially if they show no interest in hanging out with friends on the weekend.

The last one you can get that information from the school guidance office- you can check the dates he was missing from school i you suspect he/she is skipping.

It's always good to be aware of what's going on with your child, however I agree with others on this board- don't search their rooms/belongings unless you have probable cause and most importantly TALK to your teens. Keeping the lines of communication open is so important, let them know you're around to help if they need/want it.

If he is starting to get in trouble and experimenting keep a close watch on it and remember if he needs extra help/treatment the earlier you start the better off he will be.

Good luck to you and your family!

As a mom who has lived this for the last couple of years, I can tell you that the big flashing neon sign is a teen's 180 degree turn in behavior, habits and friends. The person you knew is suddenly someone you've never seen at all. The reality is, though, it wasn't really that sudden. If you think back, the signs were all plainly there much earlier than you're comfortable admitting to yourself. For specific signs, check out the link below. It's the first in a four part series of articles on this very topic. Good luck!
